Minecraft server on Netbook

My netbook:http://www.pcworld.com/product/518972/aspire-one-532h-2588-netbook.html

What I want to do with it is host a Minecraft server from it. I have  3 questions for now.

what would be the best free server o.s to run my ultra low powered laptop on?

What's the max number of people I can host with the 1GB of ram it has?

What could I do to get the most performance from the server?

I'll probably have more questions after. Thanks :3

I don't want to run it from the command line because I want to remotely control the server using Google Remote Desktop. But I'm really grateful you offered to help that way.

I don't plan to run more than 5 people at once, do I really need to upgrade my ram?

Is it even possible to over clock a netbook? If it is, I'll get another fan to cool the computer. My computer runs pretty cool on max load (40°c approx)

Would Spigot be better than vanilla for performance?

Have you ever used Lubuntu before, or other Linux distros? I've only really used Linux mint.

Would an ssd be worth it for the small server?

Alright. Well I added you on Skype (I think) so you can hopefully help me get the most performance from Minecraft, if you have time/want too. Thanks :)

I know this is late, but you should look into SpigotMC if you want Bukkit plugins. It is a lighter version of bukkit, and I hosted 4 people on a single world Bukkit server with several plugins and minimal latency, and the machine it was on had 512mb of RAM! This was Ubuntu server though, so it won't be quite as light with Lubuntu. You should look into SSH, or MineOS if you dont need anything special. Things like MCmyAdmin might be useful too, and that seems like it would be more convenient than RDP. I have a certain way I usually set up MC servers, if you want to get together on Steam and msg about it we can arrange that.
