Migrating hard drives (RAID) to new case

Hello y’all,

I’ve got RAID 5 in an oversized case. I am getting a new smaller case to be more accommodating to a living room aesthetic. Think fractal define 7 to fractal node that can fit into a TV stand.

Same motherboard. I am a bit worried that if I accidentally mix the sata connectors/cords that I’ll lose the array. Am I overly cautious or would it be fine.

Please share your thoughts on best practices.

MSI MEG Z590I UNIFY - mitx (the board sucks)
standard WD Red HDDs

First off BACK UP YOUR DATA!!!

Second off BACK UP YOUR DATA!!!

Third off BACK UP YOUR DATA!!!

Now that’s out of the way.

Mark what ports that each drive plugged into so you can replicate it when putting it back into the new case.

Take picture if you can.

I have backups for everything but media which would be a huge pain in the dick to lose.

As a hypothetical can I retrieve the data on the drives to transfer elsewhere if I F it up?

Its been a long time since ive done raid arrays and things might be different.
But
Odds are most likely no.
Transferring a raid to a new machine is risky because setting up the raid in the new machine usually requires initializing the drives.
This usually formats them.
Backing up the data to at least 2 copies gives you the best chance to restore the data once the new system is built.

Also depending on how critical the data was we never ran just a single server
They were clustered so that if one machine went down, production never stopped.
Spare servers could then be installed and automatically mirrored to the new machines

That being said machine to machine cloning is not difficult using clonezilla netclone.
It clones everything including the os.

Same machine different case. Concerned about putting sata cable in port 3 into port 1 while moving

Hence me mentioning to mark the cables / ports / drives in my earlier post and to take pictures. Use a sharpie or some other method to mark the stuff with 1 - 6 / dots / dashes / different colors. a diagram with the ports labeled how you want and the corresponding drive that plugs into it.

Be however creative or not you want to be with this. It’s for your piece of mind and no one is going to see the inside of the case once it’s up and running!
