Migrating from HDD to SSD

Hi guys, on my server Dell R530 I have a SSD as boot drive and two 3TB Seagates working like mirrored drive in Windows Server 2016. What I want is to migrate those two Seagate’s to NVMe SSDs. How would I clone them to SSD. Thanks in advance guys! If you have any questions I am here to answer.

Welcome to the community

I think we will need a little more information:

  1. what is the workload? If it is just files then just move them to a new array. If it is a database or an application server, you may not be able to just migrate it as the performance characteristics will change. It would help to know what you are doing.

  2. what “raid” are you using? Is it ms storage spaces or is the raid controller on the motherboard / a raid card?

  3. what is your proposed nvme setup? One drive / raid?

In theory you can just clone the drive onto the new nvme drive and relink the drive la els but this is windows, so it may break.

My overriding advice would be to build your new nvme array and rebuild your application / database or FileShare from scratch, just copying your data / settings.

If you are using VMs, use the tools in the hypervisor to migrate them to the new drive.

I hope that helps
