Microsoft Windows 10 Experience

Alright. I've recently decided to try Windows 10 out, the technical preview. So far it is running very good. I love how Microsoft put the start button back, that really makes me happy. They also added an option to switch to the Metro Interface like what you see in Windows 8. So Windows 10 is desktop and touchscreen friendly. I've been using it for about a week now. It plays a lot of very old games without a hitch, unless it's Lego Rock Raiders. Intel didn't have a driver for Windows 10 for my GPU, but a Windows 7 driver took care of that problem. I am running on a Dell Latitude D530. One of the things I don't like about Windows 10 so far, is the virtual desktop. It is a little confusing. It's a feature I don't use in Linux. Granted my laptop is very old, Windows 10 runs very quick. Boot up and shutdown is very quick indeed. The RAM usage without anything running is about 19% on 4GB of Ram. So the resource management is very good so far. When I was transferring a batch of files across my network, the CPU usage was up quite a bit. Averaging around 66-80% CPU usage on a Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 at 2Ghz. I never experienced high CPU usage transferring files across a network when using Windows and Linux. Bluetooth support is very good so far. It pairs with my Samsung Galaxy Centura and my Motorola Droid 3 without a hitch. There is a lot for me to explorer in Windows 10. One of the thing I would suggest is having tabs in Windows Explorer so you won't have to have a half a dozen windows open at one time. Overall, Windows 10 is looking very good!

The best Windows we could ask for in the modern age IMO

Well the Windows Store isn't necessarily Microsoft's fault alone. No one is developing for Windows in the "App" department whether on Mobile (ARM) or x86. The demand just isn't there. No one has a Windows Phone device and most desktop users don't use "apps"  so why bother?

I installed it in my Dell Venue 8 Pro, [8 Inch windows tablet]  and From what i'm aware of it's almost perfect on the desktop with no issues. in the tablet space it's an absolute mess. some apps don't launch unless you keep the Tablet in Landscape Mode. Some apps won't go to full-screen when i click on the little box on the top left hand on the window. ALL my metro Apps won't let me swipe upward or downward (which some apps its meant to do something) also they need to combine the PC Settings with the Control panel and remove the Search Button on the Damn Taskbar.

Other than that it's really excellent, especially since you have the option to use the metro interface or the new start menu. so kudos to Microsoft for finally fixing shit. Now for the next task at Hand Microsoft FIX YOUR FUCKING STORE cause it still sucks. for example WHY Isn't there a Fucking Pandora App? That makes my brain hurt.

There are a good handful of apps, probably like 5 or 6 that are really amazing from personal experience. Microsoft needs to work with these developers, give them A REASON to develop for the store. also they need to regulate the store cause there is too many scam apps to count.

I think what Microsoft has to do is Separate Their Tablet/Laptop Hybrid users from the Desktop User.

Give the Desktop user the normal interface we've all are use to using. and for the Tablet/Hybrid Users give us a mix between Tablet and Desktop which what they did very well with Windows 8.1. really though Windows 8.1 was not that bad of an experience with the tablet, it's just the scaling was complete ass. so using your fingers was weird cause text or just anything were just too small. (although this was solved using a stylus)

Overall though Microsoft "COULD" (and i say that very lightly) of had the potential to take over. but they failed miserably. they pissed everyone off by forcing the touch experience on everyone instead of separating it strictly to the Laptop/Tablet User. and the App store was poorly executed.

I'm not going to lie i had hope for it but Microsoft doesn't know how to Appeal to everyone so if nothing is truly fixed with Windows 10 they will just continue to keep digging.

I installed Windows 10 on my test bench PC. Quad Core something AMD, 4GBs of DDR3, and a 40GB HDD. Runs pretty smooth and quick. Haven't had it crash yet, and I've been screwing with drivers, programs, and settings. Over all I think I might make this my new OS if it continues down this line. The search button next to the start button is a little over doing it, imho. So far it seems like this OS will be a great technical side and user side. I just wish I still wasn't using NTFS for Windows. It's 21 years old!

If you want Pandora.... There is always the web version.

My only beef is that both Windows 8.1 & 10 aren't supported by Sweet FX for DX11 software. Bummer...

Overall not a bad review. The only thing I have to disagree because it annoys me is experience is spelled wrongly.

I've been testing it for a while now. From what I've seen, the OS is on its way to being quite good. I still get a bit annoyed with the tiles being in my start menu, but given time, I'm sure I can get used to them.

From what I have been reading, it seems Microsoft has built in an automatic reporting tool in the Tech Preview to allow them to determine usage, crashes, and general system statistics in order to help them polish the finished product before actual release. Hopefully, this means that they will have a product that everyone (or most) can be happy with when it is actually released.

One thing I do not like however, (and I believe a lot of other people will share this gripe), is that Control Panel and PC Settings still feel separated. There are still some features exclusive to one or the other and the user is left to remember which feature is where when wanting to adjust or change settings on their PC.

The multiple desktops (Virtual Desktop) is a nice feature. I honestly do not use it much in Linux, but I can see some practicality for it in Windows. It would be nice to be able to run a VM within an individual Virtual Desktop and have it separated across multiple screen setups. (i.e., Windows 10 on one of your monitors and a Linux VM on another.)

Been testing it for about 2 weeks and I must say, (other than Skype being in App form) it is really nice...

The only spare laptop I have is an old Pentium (thing) with 3GB of RAM and I must say it really execls. Performs better than both win 7, vista and 8/8.1 on that machine. Only crashed it once and that was due to an incorrect driver issue. (Ps now on a Mac LOLOLOLOLLLL)

Ive been testing it now for a few day and just for fun I thought I would run belarc advisor and it says the Operating System is Windows 9 Professional ha, other than that no crashes so far running it on a Pentium 4 with 2Gbs of ram.

How is the performance overall for your experience?

3-4 tabs in firefox and and you can see a little lag, GIMP take a good min to open even if nothing else is open. I like how when I had 4 programs open I got a little popup message from MS saying I would get better performance if I closed some programs, I also like the Feedback app and hope they keep it for release. But truth be told if the same specs apply on release I can see a bunch of old xp machines come back to life as windows 10.

Mine crashed because my modular drive bay was out a little. What Pentium were you using by the way?

Nice. Whats the speed of your Pentium? I'm thinking on seeing how well Windows 10 will run with 1 gig of ram on my laptop. See how well it'll run then. If it works well with 1 Gig, Windows 10 will bring a lot of Windows XP systems back to life

3.07Ghz, I did have everything slowed to a craw last night had just had Ninite running installing Avast at the moment.

Fixed! Thanks

You can download the non app variant, too. Download "Skype for Desktop".

i kinda wanna test it out with  my old acer netbook from 04 to see how it runs on that.
