Microsoft OFFICIALLY To Support New Processors Only On Windows 10

Some INSANELY serious BS right here

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9964/microsoft-to-only-support-new-processors-on-windows-10

but today Microsoft announced that going forward, new processors will only be supported on Windows 10. Skylake will only be supported through devices on a supported list, and even those will only have support until July 2017.

According to the blog post my Terry Myerson, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform for Kaby Lake (Intel’s next gen 14 nm processors), Snapdragon 820 (Qualcomm), and Carrizo (AMD).

Thoughts?...

guess this means everyone hoping for Zen has to jump to Win10

Personally I've been solely on Win 10 since first Preview but this is BULLSHIT

Glad I've switched to Linux, Windows 10 is getting worse and worse. I think the only way I'll use Win10 at all now is if I could get the last build of Tech Preview, before it had all the spyware.

Good thing i have moved fully to Fedora & Elementary OS.
But it does Suck for a lot of users.
But they didn't say anything about there Server OS - My Plex Server/NAS Is still 2008 R2

Actually Linux users should be somewhat worried. The article states that Skylake and Future Generation Processors from Qualcomm, AMD, and Intel will only Support Windows 10. it may not won't work with Windows 7 or 8.1. this may or may not also include Linux.

Thats the worst part

I didn't see that. Intel In Bed with $soft ?

I fully expect to see this on next Tek

Intel has been in bed with Microsoft for years. according to the article AMD and Qualcomm will jump on the bed as well.

If that do happen Linux can be dead in a very short time. I hope that won't happen

I think this could actually be good IF Intel decides to scrap a lot of the backwards compatibility they include in their architecture. Same goes for AMD. x86_64 works well enough, but it's aging and due to improvements in die and micro-architectures, it might be worth it to leave x86_64 to emulation and focus on improvements in optimization across the board.

Thing is, that's not going to happen, at least not for a while. It would make sense if that were the reason, but Intel wouldn't be willing to give up the mainline support it's given to the architecture and AMD is probably not ready to graduate its license.

At least they're not forcing people using "older" architectures to use Windows 10. And really, the improvements Intel has been making recently haven't made it worth it to upgrade every single generation. Five year old processors still run fine. So meh, whatever. Remember, DirectX 12 will also be W10-only, and that is mostly improvements for AMD and Intel graphics. So, it's whatever.

valid point, but still...

I don't think Chip manufactures would limit Linux from there CPU's, I think it'll be something on the OS side of Microsoft, not sure exactly how they'd stop the CPU's working on older windows though

Don't think AMD will actually make there own Linux based OS given the amount that already exist, could deffs see them encouraging people to use Linux and having a lot more Linux support and stability

I don't think that will happen, at least for AMD, considering the amount of improvements AMD has been working toward for Linux. Besides, I would think that would be means for an anti-trust lawsuit. I could be wrong, though.

There are some OEM's that do this right now with their motherboards. look at ASUS. people have been complaining about wanting proper Linux support for their motherboards for years and at every left turn, nope, nope, nope.

If Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm do this it may be a problem. though it's not as bad on paper as it sounds.

If I could break it down cause the article is somewhat convoluted. Future CPUS will only work with Windows 10. it won't support 7 or 8.1.

I really hope Not.
For all the good things AMD had been doing for the Open source Community. I don't think they will Screw over the community just for $soft

I Can See a lot of People Switching to ARM in the Likes of Europe where Open source is embraced

If something Like this happened on the motherboard side of things I think we'd see some company's support Linux more, either that or we'll see more Motherboard manufactures pop up that and built around supporting Linux. I think the hacker community will be very important if anything like this does happen.
