Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.41%is in serious discussions to buy Mojang AB, the Swedish company behind the popular "Minecraft" videogame, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The deal would be valued at more than $2 billion and could be signed as early as this week, this person said.
See the problem with this is Microsoft ruins everything they touch so if this happens goodbye Minecraft it was nice knowing you. I really hope Microsoft doesn't buy Mojang.
i suppose they need to diversify their revenue stream now that they know Windows revenue will stagnate or decrease in the near future.
Between Chrome OS, Mac OSX/iOS, Steam OS and various Android and linux distros the days of their stranglehold on mainstream OS market are numbered. The desktop market and a bit of the server market are all coming under pressure due to competition or are simply not an option due to NSA fears. Microsoft Office (excel, really) won't be much of a barrier to switching for most people for long. Just a few finance guys and accountants.
What i don't understand is why they couldn't just take a few of the thousands of software developers they fired and start their own game development/publishing teams? I'm sure some of the skills would be transferable and would complement new gaming hires/whomever they acquire.
I don't think this will ever happen. If you look at how notch feels about microsoft you will see that he would never let the company that he started to be bought by Microsoft. I know that notch does not run the company, but i'm sure that his word is highly regarded in the company.
I really don't see how Minecraft is worth $2BN, and there is nothing to say that notch could pull off another few minecrafts, nor any of his mates at his company. If I was him I would take it and run, that is an insanely good deal, I think he pretty much owns 100% of the shares too soo, I mean....
Mojang are technically a publisher now s well. They published Cobalt. and have a couple of IPs to play with. But Minecraft is the big draw. I am sure this is to get faster and bigger updates for their fast becoming redundant consoles.
Oh well if this is true I will go grab the old Jar files while I still can.
There are many reliable sources now confirming that this is a done deal. Minecraft has been my son and I's favorite game for years now. I just hope this deal doesn't change the game beyond recognition. Anyways... I have also read a lot about how Notch is a quitter and a sellout. All I have to say about that is: DDDAAAYYYYUUUM... NOTCH 'NDEM DONE CAME UP!!!! I completely respect his decision, he went from an indie game coder to a frikkin' multi-billionaire in like what... less than 4 years? GG Notch... GG!!!!!
