Microsoft Looking to Buy GitHub?

Not sure why though, the concept was exactly the same.
The site was shitty, but the concept the same.

Because Microsoft under Ballmer saw OSS and Linux in particular as the enemy. This was the era of “embrace, extend, and exterminate”. All things led back to Windows and Office.

Today’s Microsoft is a very different animal. Windows is receding in importance, and Office is fighting for its life against Google Docs. Nadella is transforming MS into a services lifecycle company, built around Azure. Their business goals aren’t necessarily hostile to OSS developers.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t scheming behind the scenes, but it isn’t immediately obvious that they’re lying to our faces this time.

Nam flashbacks intensifies.

GitHubs announcement.

Sigh,

One more thing for Microsoft to mess up. Luckily there are many alternatives!

I’m really not sure that Microsoft will do too much wrong here. GitHub has always been kinda shit, this is just a change in ownership, so I doubt it will be any worse off.

This is why I’ve been using GitLab for so long.

They’ve been lagging behind, this is a good move my Microsoft and GitHub. GitHub need the money and resources, Microsoft need GitHub may as well buy it because all their stuff is on it.

Can confirm it’s alright. I use it daily and have for about 1.5 years now.

Though in my personal life I agree, my Skype friends list is empty. Everyone uses discord now

We’ve had nothing but problems. (hosted by O365)

We moved to slack because even that’s better than S4B’s dropped calls, instability over mobile connections and general unwillingness to transmit data to intended recipients.

First thing you see, You will need microsoft account to use github. I don’t use the platform so I’m not affected but I still don’t like it. Just because MS had a change of CEO doesn’t mean their intentions are different. Apple is still works the same way today as it did when Jobs was around. Fuck this and fuck microsoft.

That’s not true at all. Jobs would veto incredibly stupid design decisions. Whoever’s at the helm now can’t tell his ass from a headphone jack.

Interesting, I too am on O365 and we never seem to have problems with it. But that’s the nature of technology sometimes, we can use the same thing and have wildly different experiences .

Source? Everything I’ve read indicates nothing will change.

Except with Jobs Apple was a titan of tech and now it’s just a gimmick with bells and whistles.

Changing CEO level is huge. Disregarding the impact is ignorant

Here’s some Kool aid for the haters:

Showing my objectivity here

Dude references Netscape and other Microsoft adventures from the 90s. He’s still very upset about something.

If you want to go on about how evil Microsoft are with no evidence r/linux loves that shit. If you want to actually inform yourself and others then post away with actual information.

At the very least get informed on how business works, and how Microsoft works in 2018.

Do you work for Microsoft? If not then stop pretending that you know microsoft inside out. The greed for money and control of software will override any sensible ideas that will be discussed at the top level.

I don’t see how they were any different back then. Today they are still Titan that make gimmicks with bells and whistles.

You’re either being wilfully ignorant or you’re a very good troll.

Microsoft is raking in huge amounts of money at the same time that they’re slowly moving to be a more FOSS friendly and open company.

They actually made some decent hardware for people who enjoyed it. Yes it was quite expensive, but it was at least good. Never thought I would have to defend apple.

Both subjects you’re discussing shows you’re infected with some sort of affliction against companies. That sort of blind hate provides nothing but harm to this community and discussion.
