Micro atx on a budget

I am looking at building a micro atx gaming rig for under 500. I am going to be replacing my almost 10 year old laptop with it. It will be running windows 7 pro 64 bit and I am trying to get the most bang for my buck. The 500 will be for the case and hardware within not including the os. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

If you really can't afford the price difference of 29,- $, something I can fully understand, then you may want to change the graphics card with the 4GB model. The Asus 4GB one is like 164,-$ or something...

Just make sure that the bios are updated. I recently bought a G4560 and a ASRock H110M-HDS and the bios hadnt been updated so it didnt work. Luckly ASRock was kind enough to send over a new bios chip.

I feel like that CPU/GPU combination would bottleneck the RX480 in some games. I have no proof of that but otherwise its a decent spec build.

I guess the real question should be:

What games do you plan on playing @Shotine ?

it's a slightly newer pentium with 7% better ipc and .2 ghz faster. the gpu does not have as nice of a heatsink or vrm, but it's still pretty good with the same core and vram. the psu is on sale so act now on that if you can. it's really nice for the price.

for ssd storage the muskin triactor this is direct from the company not a 3rd party. this is overbudget however.

option b is the 1tb wd drive psycho linked.

Fallout 4, civ.. pick one...., mass effect Andromeda, doom, starbound and the the like.

Heres my recommendation then:

I skipped the nicer RX480 for a GTX1060 because I'm an Nvidia shill but either card is great for the money really. You could sub out the RX480 4GB and be just as well off. The one thing I feel you're going to need though is a better processor than the pentium. You really should think about putting in that $100 more so you can have an i5 (or AMD R5 when they come out), because thats going to hit the sweet spot for price/performance.

I should have mentioned I don't need a HD because have a 320gb wd from a laptop I parted out. So I could use that towards a better processor

Is it a 5400rpm? cause if so load times are going to suck. Even on a 7200rpm its not great. An SSD would go a long way but thats probably out of your budget.

You can use an SSD for boot drive, meaning the Windows and software on it, while games will be on the hard drive.

Now if you can wait a couple months for the Ryzen 5 CPUs - wait for them...

Buy used. You're going get a complete garbage PC for $500 brand new, but can get some really good PC's for $300 used, with stuff like fouth gen i5's. Don't be an idiot.

"But, what if it dies in like a month or two"
Rarely does it happen, and if you're worried, make sure it has warranty for 90 days or longer.

This is a lot more difficult than I remember....

Its a wd black so the 7200 rpm

here's my list

i3 6100
Rx 470
128 SSD + 1 TB HHD
non-trash PSU

It's $545 with a few mail in rebates, but it'll be well balanced and not catch fire

EDIT: I see you may be able to shave down the HHD since you have some good spinning rust already

Agreed. The 2670 can be found for 100 bucks. I don't know if their is a micro atx board for it tho.

Don't know if currently it's great for gaming either. But I'm sure you will use this for more then gaming.

If your near a microcenter You can get a i3 w/ MB for around 120
If not the new Kaby Lake Pentiums have 4 threads, are dirt cheap, and fine for gaming.
For the MB go cheap.

I am an AMD guy so I went the 8320e for my main rig which was just over 400 for 2 reason, I like AMD and I wanted to play around with OC'ing:)
