As far as Metallica are concerned, their 80s stuff is largely classic, and largely responsible for getting me into metal in the first place. I'm sure if I'd grown up in the 80s, my view on them would have been different - sure, these days it's easy to say "oh metallica are so much worse than rigor mortis or xentrix or sabbat or [insert obscure thrash band here]" but back then it was hugely innovative. But yeah, looking back now, with all our knowledge, they're pretty weak - although they were really influential at the time, just think of all the tech/prog/"long"-thrash that came out after Master of Puppets and Justice.Â
But yeah, I only enjoy the first two - which I never listen to. As has been said, there are much better thrash bands out there (ie Overkill aka the BEST thrash band ever).
Edit: @Div linking UltraBoris' review: Well played, sir, well played.
whats with all the people on here who are like "hai, post in my thread but only if you agree with me, i cant handle any criticism and only want to talk to people who tell me im great"
We are scanning the scene in the city tonight We're looking for you to start up a fight There's an evil feeling in our brains But it's nothing new you know it drives us insane.
It would definitely be Ride The Lightning for me. The title track, Trapped Under Ice, Creeping Death, good stuff... That and Kill 'Em All are the only two albums I like from Metallica anymore.
Man, those lyrics are so simple yet at the same time so amazing. They say it all without having to literally say it. And the drumming on that song... SOOOO fucking good. It's really the magnum opus of Lars' career.
The first time I heard it I couldn't even believe it was a Metallica album!
