So I have been looking for a good game to take my mind off things after work. MGSV has caught my eye on Steam, but I can't help but wonder whether it is overrated? Metacritic gave it a solid 92+, but I haven't seen any reviews which go beyond 'praising the gameplay' without actually specifying what that means. Most 'lets plays' I have seen appear to be quite repetitive (sneak towards enemy base, shoot, sneak away from enemy base). Older Metal Gear games seem to have compensated for that with a great story, but the reviews highlight that this is the games weakest point (plus, in the trailer, the main character appears to be using his friend's ashes to wipe his face with , which strikes me as kind of ...well...weird?).
As such I am wondering what those who have played the game have to say about it. I believe the TekSyndicate community's taste to be quite eclectic/ refined, which means that if the game is well received here it would likely be worth checking out. If it bombs, well that's 50 bucks saved. What do you think? Worth the cash or repetitive lackluster?

PS: Loved Skyrim and the Witcher III but I am looking for something new. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.
hey there, it`s different than previous mgs, similar to psp games like peace walker, base development, research etc plays important role in game, previous metal gears were more linear, story driven games. Here if you find a mission to hard you can play it later , when you develop proper equipment and try later with different approach. With game that big and open world It is easy to get bored if you try the same methods all the time (sneak, put to sleep/knock out, extract) or wait for sandstorm. The part of game that I hate the most is the new interface with marked enemies etc, sometimes markers pile on a top of each other and it makes aiming difficult from a certain distance also it make sneaking easier as marked enemies still are visible even if not in line of sight :( Some minor bugs can force you to replay whole mission (I got to a command centre and the guard was sleeping on a bunk, game decided to make a save point, something went wrong few secs later so I had to reload and the guard was not sleeping anymore, with every reload i got instant alarm and got killed instantly) If you are a completionist you will be replaying some missions as the extra objectives are hidden and some require replaying mission anyways. You play a role of a mercenary doing your paid jobs and the story unfolds slowly, I am not sure if i like it this way, but its my opinion, I havent finished the game yet but I cant force myself to play it 10 hours straight like previous Metal gears (minus portable ones,I hate Peace Walker and I feel like I got a 2.0 version of that ).
I'm around 3 hours into it so far and am liking it. The story seems fairly interesting, though I haven't played the other Metal Gear games except for Ground Zeros and a little of 4. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Not sure how much it matters in the grand scheme of things but the end of GZ leads directly into the beginning of TPP. In TPP it does show most of the ending cut scene GZ so it's probably not strictly necessary. GZ is pretty fun though, I need to play more of it, I saw the ending credits and am 8% complete. Lol.
ground zeros is short, very short, can be finished in well under 1 hour(its more like 1 episode from phantom pain-so you can do it quickly if you like or replay same camp map with different objectives or till you find all the stuff.it can be 20 minutes of fun if you just do it to have the story right or 5 hours if you like maxing games), .If you can get it cheap then its ok(how much would you pay for less than 1 hour content?).Or watch it on yt hehe.MGS3-->Portable Ops--->Peace Walker----> ground zeros----->Phantom pain. Thats the order to play to get the whole story right. PO and PW are psp games but important part of main story . I dont like them but one can always read story summary or watch the collection of comics to get the whole picture.
Thanks everyone. Great advice. Will probably wait until the price comes down a little bit before checking it out, but nevertheless still intreagued even if its just for the opening hour of the game.
The best, educated advice i can give you, coming from someone who's played the series from the beginning - is to hold off on it if you haven't played the previous games. You won't know what the hell's going on. And the story; despite the fact that it's extremely disappointing, still is a very important part of the experience. Then again, it ALSO is a good reason to play the game purely from a gameplay perspective while ignoring the story. And MGSV has been pushing gameplay and gameplay quality all across the board. There's a lot to do. So, make your choice based on how much of the experience you want to take in. It might just be worth waiting for an HD compilation of all games on PC. The PS3 had the Legacy Collection, which was one of the best compilations ever made. I'm really glad i bought that. They may just make something like that for the PC.
And MGS is a very formulaic game. If you're really used to Elder Scrolls or The Witcher and whatnot, then it might seem very awkward or obsolete. But, it's just that type of game. It is what it is. It's not open world. Well, not until NOW. Furthermore, i will say that the story is such a complete nightmare that i was so excited to get the game, that i'm glad i didn't. (I knew something extremely odd was going on, so i went ahead and read the plot summary and details). It's basically to Metal Gear Solid fans what Mass Effect 3 is to Mass Effect fans in terms of story. At least the non nut-swinging blindly-faithful fanboys who aren't afraid to admit it when a developer has completely shit the bed, anyway...
Mgs v is not a good game to start with MG universe.Prenihility mentioned hd collection which is great starting point plus Gamecube version of MGS, Metal Gear Solid :Twin Snakes, you could run emulator to check if you like it.PS version looks like crap if you are not used to low polygon, low resolution games . Konami tried to milk MG fans with Ground Zeros and portable crap like metal gear acid :(
Mgs story is a clusterfuck. They're also not in chronological order. If you want to play it for the story play mgs 3, then peace walker and your understand what's go8by on in this one. Mgs 1 takes place 20 something years after this, followed by 2 and 4.
Besides that I love the new gameplay. Others might think otherwise, though. But there's a lot to do. Not used to mgs being open world, but i think it's great. Every time you get into an area its like playing the old games, sneaking around close quarters. The tagging marks a good portion of guards. But you're deffinetly going to miss a few, and til bite you in the was if you're not careful. The ai is intuitive. The guards learn from their mistakes and adjust to your playstyle. So if you approach every mission the same way your get f***ed.
It's not that bad a game if you enjoy grindy repetitive MMO gameplay and find it rather relaxing.
But as a metal gear fan the story just isn't there, it doesn't even conclude properly and doesn't do enough to cement itself as the conclusive metal gear game. I wish they had established origin stories for the fox hound unit, especially sniper wolf since big boss was supposed to rescue her.
None of the boss fights are even very memorable, they're literally just about all the same except for one fight that's unique, but it's not even a real fight, you just need to know a trick to beat the boss.
I'm glad I read this now and ignored the reviews :) I'll avoid it till it's on offer and carry on playing Mad Max which I love and the reviewers are meh!
