You will in all likelihood not be able to run them at 3600 so I’d suggest getting a 3200 or maybe even a little less as the first Ryzen memory controllers and infinity fabrik could only very rarely go over 3200.
Aha thanks! Yes I recall that it was quite hard to push the infinity fabric back then.
What about upgrading the TR CPU? Did Asus release a newer version of their TR boards for the current generation of Threadripper? Are TRX40 the latest boards?
Yes there is the ASUS Zenith Extreme II (Alpha) and Strix on TRX40 with the 3960X(24C), 3970X(32C) and 3990X(64).
The older ones don’t work on the newer boards though, so there is only the choice I listed above.
But those can often push 3600 memory.
If you’re pushing for more RAM, the clocks will need to be tempered back a fair bit
Do check memory mfrs, for they may have their own compatibility checklist
Think I’m going to hold off. I remember how hard it was to get this CPU to play nicely. I still have some terrible issues with USB hubs on the TR system.
On my Intel systems - no issues. I most likely need to do another AGESA update but given that it’s running I don’t want to risk poking the bear.
Outside of a BIOS update, I wouldn’t see a technical reason to it NOT working
… It wouldn’t sit well to ignore, considering some active hostility, with TRX4 being 1Gen
There will be exactly 1 specific USB port problem free on TR
And it will not be documented, it could be on the back or it could even be one of the front panel ports, and it’s different for every PCB design, but it is there
Some off hand knowledge Wendell dropped on me
As already established, you probably wouldn’t be able run them at 3600
3200 is about the cap and even if it’s running 3200, you’re getting silent error bogging up your memory controller because fabric is too fast
3000 with some really tight timings would be better suited
I just sold my old Asrock X399 Professional Gaming mobo to a teammate who replaced my G.Skill 3200CL14 4 X 8GB sticks that I had running at 3466CL14 stably with new Corsair Vengeance 3600CL18 4X 8GB sticks and a new 2970WX cpu and it is running stable at XMP values.
