Media server?

Hey Guys,

I've been using NFS shares to share files and music. This has worked fine and dandy on my arch systems.
Now here is the catch, I want my family to be able to use my system to stream music and other media.
I've looked at plex, and it works well, but it isn't nearly as fast or seamless as I want it to do.
Here is the plan:

  • 5 IOS devices

  • 4 Android devices

  • 4 Debian/Ubuntu laptops

  • 2 Arch Workstations

Is there a FOSS solution to share media as seemless as possible?

am interested in this very much...

I found this wikipedia page on Apple's DAAP server. I know for a fact banshee supports the DAAP protocol.

According to the page the only activly developed DAAP server that is cross platform is AMPACHE.
I don't think using a web interface is the easiest way to use a server at all. It takes away the seemless operation I want for my scenario.
I'm going to look if you need the web interface for the DAAP function.

Also, something that i've been using since the last couple of months for my music is beets. YI think you'll like it.

Here is is

there are different approaches you can go with Kodi if you want a more responsive equivalent to Plex or you can look at VLC or other media players that can keep track of media libraries.

I would love for the experience to be as seemless as possible. With that solution, all clients would need to install an app/programm to view the media. With DAAP there wouldn't be any additional program on IOS devices. I don't know of a native way to do this on android, but there must be a solution for those to.
On the gnu/linux clients I can simply replace the built in media player with banshee and the users won't know the deffernce.
