So I dual booted my school laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 and everything was great, up until today.
I went to boot windows, from burg, and all that happened was a black screen with a flashing command prompt key, you can't type or anything. So naturally I wasn't fussed. I turned the computer off and booted Ubuntu, that worked fine. I figured it must be something wrong with either burg or the Windows MBR.
When I got home I got out my trusty windows 8 CD and ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr from terminal, I rebooted the computer and guess what! It dun work still.
Looking for tips on what is wrong.
I know that everything is still there because I was able to look at the files from Ubuntu and I got all of my schoolwork out safely
but not I am stuck with a computer that doesn't boot windows or Ubuntu. It just does the thing stated above.
Maybe its just screwed but I would love to fix it, or even just know what the hell went wrong.
Have you tried the repair through the windows installer, can't remember is its like windows 7 where you can repair the is without deleting any files. I have had tons of trubble with windows 8 and Ubuntu on the same drive but I found out that if you boot the windows bootloader instead of grub it works 9/10 times, but that's just my experience.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
Nope, it doesn't work :(
I guess I will be reformatting my computer lol.
1 trick I did was install Ubuntu then install windows 8 and the windows 8 bootloader seemed to detect my Ubuntu install but could not boot it. That's when I had to do the work around mentioned earlier. also there's something called EasyBCDand its supposed to make dual booting good but I never had any luck at.if I were you I'd do a advanced install of Ubuntu and make sure to put the bootloader on the same partition as the Ubuntu installation. just don't have it overwrite the windows 8 loader and you should be fine. you need to set up the partitions in the Windows Installer because the abuntu installer or format the disk in a GPT partition table instead of MBR, and Windows doesn't like that
I did some digging in the mbr settings and found that windows doesn't think there is a windows distribution installed... but then says that the mbr is on the partition c: sooo I think it is royally fucked. gonna try again but probably with no hope :(
I would just use ubuntu but for the moment, not for long, I can't connect to the schools network in Ubuntu. urgh, windows you POS.
When I try and "refresh" windows, it just says that the drive is "locked" and to unlock it and try again. Any ideas?
Thank you for your help, I managed to fix it with one simple command in the end.
just needed to type: bcdboot c:\Windows /s c:
into cmd and all was fixed. :D
well that seemed easy. glad you fixed it
i thought you couldnt dual boot win 8 and linux.
It fucks up if you have an efi bois or are using fast boot. There are ways around it to make it stable. Especially if the computer is from before 2010.
