Okay, I played the old game to death. Had a horrible computer back then that was just able to run the game. 60 FPS? Pfff, not even on the map. Played most of the other games that was even similar in concept, sadly there pretty much isn't anything really similar to Carmageddon. So when I heard that Stainless was working on a new game I was excited. Backed the game in 2013 I think? It's been kinda a long wait. The game turned out to be a bit ambitious, physics model and simulation became something of an overkill I think.
Now I've had the final version of the game for a while and I find the game fun to play. It's just like the old Caramgeddon game. Wrecking opponents, running over countless of hapless pedestrians etc. I love it, it really feels like Carmageddon.
It runs rather well on my system. I've seen a lot of people complain about performance problems, but I don't know. Granted my machine is a bit of a beast, but still I'm not at a solid 60 FPS at the highest settings. Dips down to 40 often. Then again, on low settings FPS is nailed at 60.
I got Carmageddon out of that and a quick look for a new Carmageddon turns up Carmageddon: Reincarnation.
Either way I also backed this and while development was slow the final game is nice but very badly optimised. It runs playavly but it is not a constant 60 and while it does look good it is nothing so amazing graphics wise that would warrant the slow performance.
Still seriously enjoy it though. Carma fan myself for a long time.
Game was updated last week, performance is up noticeably. There is also a kind of roadmap for future updates, don't expect stuff to be done soon though. I suspect it will be another three months before there is another update.
There is talk about a linux version, but it will be done "last". So maybe sometime next year?
Edit: The devs actually streams on twitch about every week. They talk about the upcoming build. They are rewriting the shaders to get to the performance issues, tweaks to multiplayer too. For instance, offensive power ups in multi will be random and one a piece. Makes stuff more interesting. Today Nobby said that the new update should be announced "very soon indeed". Sounds good to me, cautiously optimistic.
