Manjaro linux screen tearing on fps

Having a problem with screen tearing on fps and youtube videos with lots of motion. Do not have the problem with kodi and movies.
Manjaro xfce 16.06.1
Nvidea gtx 560 driver 364.19
The rest of my pc specs are linked to my icon.
If you need more info and that requires terminal commands please include them in reply. New to linux still learning.
Noticed the tearing in minecraft it is the only fps i have right now working on skyrim thru play on linux.

Have you tried enabaling Sync to VBlank and Allow Flipping in your Nvidia X Server Settings. I will also tell you that screen tearing is a common problem in a lot of light weight Linux distros and the usual way to fix it is to download a compositor like compiz or Compton or kwin and disable the xfce compositor xfwm4. But for me I always found that to be to much of a hassel and just ended up going with a heaver weight distro like gnome or Cinnamon.

Installing a compistor, as @shadowvengence22 suggested, should solve the problem, if enabling those nvidia options don't work.

I use compton, as well as many other users. It took me a bit of configuring to get rid of tearing, and these settings work for me compton --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc --paint-on-overlay --xrender-sync & (I've put this line in my ~/.xinitrc).

So the problem is xfce not being a more powerful interface?

How would I go about using compton?
Do I just install and run that command line or is there more to it.
This is the longest I have used Linux and that is two weeks, so I am very new to this.

I really like the way the arch CLI works and would like to stick to it.

If you could give me a step by step on the compton that would be great.

Thanks for the info

here are some video on how to install the diffrent compositors.
Kwin

Compton

compiz

Also be aware that the Kwin and Compiz instructions are for Debian based systems but you should be able to fined all of the packages in the Aur repos.

Watching these videos right now

Was watching spatrys cup of linux that is how i started using Manjaro

Because xfce is light weight is that why I am having the probem and if I went to something heavy weigh then I would not have this problem.

Just wonder I like to collect info.

The problem might still persist but it is far less likely on a heavier weight distro.

Thanks for the info.

After installing compiz will i have to go into the program and experiment till I find the thing that fixes it, or does just the install fix it?

@shadowvengence22 Thanks for the video the one on compton showed me how to fix the problem.

The one I was looking at was something about making your desktop look interesting and I have mine the way i like.

The one you posted was just how to fix the screen tearing.

Thanks you very much for your time and looking this up for me.

Vblank and Flipping are active.

Did some goggleing and found out where to disable compositor.
Normally my goggle searches do not work, got lucky this time.
Will keep playing with this to make it work.
Ended up using this web site, so far it looks to have fixed the problem.

Just to answer your main point. Yes the lightweight Linux distributions such as LXDE, Openbox, XFCE, MATE all require a "decent" compositor, each has their own but they mostly suck when it comes to vsync and effects such as fades, blur, animation and transparency. Compton is popular but can be more than a bit long winded to get the right look and feel. Kwin or compiz are a much quicker fix and come with all the workspaces/effects/blurs/transparency and vsync options out of the box.

Cinnamon, Gnome, KDE, Budgie all are designed around having the effects compositor properly built in and are as such perfectly fine with vsync but as you may have guessed you cannot swap them easily for something else as they are full integrated.

I would try Compiz as its what Ubuntu uses and games for linux are made against this standard, plus on the compiz settings manager you can keep compositing enabled for those games that are not vsync supported in fullscreen mode and compiz will use its own method to make them :)

Do you know of a good web site / video that will give a complete run down on how to use compiz

Thanks for the info

fyi Compiz is very complete, you can easily screw up a setting if your clicking around. However out of the box the default settings should be OK. I haven't setup compiz from scratch, i know that Mint has a default config for compiz for MATE/XFCE ( they suppled it with compiz now because of your exact problem )

All i can suggest is that you look around youtube. Have you installed it from the AUR in Manjaro yet ?

I have found a video where the person tells you the order to install on Manjaro xfce and then has more videos discussing how to configure for looks. He does not talk about screen tearing, more things like effects.

So I would start with his installing compiz and go from there, see if someone has a video about how to fix screen tearing.

compton is nice, but it looks like it has no gui for look around.

would i uninstall compton and install compiz or would i just disable loading at start up.

compiz settings manager should have a vsync section. Removing compton shouldn't hurt.

don't add the other stuff below, as with everything make one change at a time then test :)

Thanks for the info installed compiz manjaro did not need to go to the AUR to get it or find out the install order. clicked on compiz manjaro and did the install

Looks like it is working did minecraft and youtube with the videos that where giving me a problem. Did not have to make any changes in the settings, worked out the box.

So I have compiz and I learned a few things about compton

Thanks everyone for the help.

Will keep you updated if this is the full fix.
So far so good compiz worked and compton worked

Have a question for you?
Compiz works good all the tearing is gone on what ever I tested.
The only thing i want to change is pointers, they are back to the original points from Manjaro.
It was a lot of work getting rid of the green folders icons and points, now the pointers are back.

using gnome ? you can change the pointers in dconf editor under '>gnome>desktop>peripherals>mouse' For me its mate....

Change the Cursor-theme value to whatever is installed on your system, I have DMZ-Black but I believe that is related to MATE. You can change the pointer size here also, I use 8 as I have a 4k display.

You can probably search around to find our what themes are available under Manjaro, or search google for mangaro pointer themes

The problem is strange on start up it uses Maia pointers and I do not have this one selected
When I have my browser open and I move my cursor on the windows I get DMZ black, when on the same browser window I move it up to the title bar it goes to Maia cursor.
When I click on things like settings I get the Maia cursor in the windows for settings.
When I switch between settings window and browser window the cursur swithches settings windows Maia and browser windows DMZ black
