MadCatz is a company that produces expensive mice. The original company MadCatz Inc. went bust. The new company Mad Catz Global Ltd. Produces basically the same products and have added new ones and new versions of the older ones. The software from the Inc iteration is poor but works, for the new Global Ltd, iteration the software got a new (less nice) jacket but does not work on the older hardware.
And this is just 2 versions of one company. The basic software could be adapted to work with other mice and I even see similarities with Azeron gamepad software, that is much much easier to use.
