I had an argument with a friend at school because he said that the mac pro is better than any custom PC you can build for the same price. So, I took it upon myself to build a custom PC for about the same price as the mac pro that I think would perform better. I don't want to go to school all confident that I have the superior build and have the tables turn on me. That's why I have come here for you help to see if the PC i built on pcpartspicker is better or the same as the mac pro. In my opinion the PC should perform better than the mac pro, but we will see.BTW size doesn't matter because the mac pro is going to look like a octopus because you have to use external drives.
The Mac Pro I decided to go against is MKBHD's 8 core- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwnSX-3ncSA&list=UUBJycsmduvYEL83R_U4JriQ&feature=c4-overview

This is one of the reasons that I think I will win this battle of the ages with my friend- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eGYYbkbXCA&feature=youtu.be
Well good luck to me I guess and thanks for helping
Hikage, The ASRock X79 Extreme 11 has 7 PCI slots so I could add another asus rog 240gb ssd since in the build I am only using 6 PCI slots. Also, yes the system is watercooled with a XSPC RayStorm D5 Photon RX480 V3 watercooling kit. I had to add it in the custom parts list because pcpartspicker didn't have it in the cooling section.
"have have done no research, it's just a fact" look up the price for a base model with top end gpus and come back, not saying it's good at every price, but come on 5 minutes of research
also you'd need riser cables to make 10 slots worth of cards work out
i can't say for certain if it would be more powerful or not, as the mac is using workstation gpus and you're using gaming cards, and depending on the workload, say open cl, it's doesn't take amd much to crush nvidia's best offerings
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2XKEF I'm comparing to the 8 core mac pro with dual D700's and 1tb pcie ssd space along with 64gb's of 1866mhz Ecc ram.
My build has a slightly higher clocked 8 core xeon with three Gtx Titan Blacks. I also chose to go with dual 512gb 840 evo ssd's to put in raid 0 for better performance than the 1tb pcie ssd apple has. I also went for 64gb's of 2133mhz ram. Ecc ram could easily be substituted for a little bit more $.
Imho It is a really cool concept I enjoy the way it looks very innovative. I would hate to have to replace anything the parts are going to cost a ton of money when I replaced my G4 board it was 520.00. This reminds me of the G4 cube which I thought was pretty neat. I would only purchase this if I was rich, knew very little about computers, and liked the aesthetics. Its a Jaguar very well built, short warranty, extremely expensive to fix, and not the fastest on the block. Honestly all pre builts are a rip off not just apples as far as prebuilts go they have been making a rigid well built product for years so it would be difficult to find an alternative with the same build quality maybe falcon northwest but they can be even more expensive. I don't understand why everyone is hating on this I think its pretty cool just not for me.
I actually agree with KevinHienRich. In that It is really impressive that Apple managed to put good hardware in such a small form factor. On the other hand it only comes with 1tb hard drive at the most. It's meant to be used as a workstation PC for softwares like adobe premier and video editing can take a lot of your HDD space.
I do also agree that mostly all pre built computers are stupidly high priced and you could build much better for the same price on your own.
Matt by the way your Linus Tech Tips forum account doesn't work.
Hey Kevinhienrich, I am not hating on the mac pro it's just that the guy at school said that, " Mac pro is the best computer you can get for the price." I knew at the moment that I could totally build a better PC for the price which he didn't agree to so I posted this thread to prove him wrong. I actually agree that the mac pros form factor is pretty exciting to see even though I am not a big apple fan. I did laugh at the trash can jokes, but I cant even imagine how hard it would be to put that hardware that they did in that form factor.
Yes, I also agree, it is pretty impressive that apple got all of that into a small form factor, but the fact that some of the components are not user replaceable, and that it looks like a sea creature when you add parts (Like external hard drive, and DVD Drives) makes me dislike the computer.
Not to mention the insane price!!! $8099 is just to much!
