So I have an Asus X99-A on the way and it supports "M key" drives.
now from my understanding you cna get M.2 drives in M, and B+M connectors.
so my question is, can I use a B+M drive in a M socket, since the strictly M drives are rather expensive.

bump
Yes, the B+M drives will work in both B and M slots.
The M drives have twice the throughput, hence the higher price.
B+M have twice the compatibility at the cost of bandwidth.
B are just old...

ok that makes sense.
thanks for the info, I think I might just wait for more M drives and for better price to capacity higher performance drives to come out, anything reasonably priced isn't faster than my 850 Sata3.
Well, on that side, even the B+M keyed ones have the potential for almost twice the throughput than sata3, a theoretical 10Gb/s vs max 6Gb/s.
But waiting for more affordable M keyed drive is a good idea.
most of the "affordable" m.2 drivers aren't faster than my Sata3 drive.
and I already blew most of my money on a X99 mobo + cpu so the marginal utility isn't there.
