Your fine just use the onboard till you outgrow it, save the money
Thanks I’ll try that… And yeah I have to save money for a future NAS build and I’ll need an expensive LSI 16i for sure then… I may still get a DELL PERC H200 I just found for 40$… I just have to flash it to IT MODE… Seems to be easy to do.
If you get a disk shelf youll only really need like an 4e or 8e you can run tons of drives off one of those cables when its spinning rust.
I’m still considering my options… If to buy a used disk shelf and have the main system run in a 2U or just buy a 4U with hot swap cages…
Looks like it worked without any issues… I mean, the SATA cables are so much more rigid and makes cable management a pain but it worked… I guess that is why I liked those SFF-8087 cables… Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated!
I have been happy with my 3U 16-Bay Storage JBOD Disk Shelf Expansion SAS 16x 3.5" HDD Tray J630s Promise | eBay
Mind you because of Chia shit is way over priced for anything storage related
(Paid $250 shipped, my rack is not full depth so needed shorter )
Tell me about it… all those crypto stuff, is just annoying really. No wonder an LSI 16i I was looking at once was 150$ and now sold for 600$…
That is why I am holding off, it is just too crazy right now. I thought, OK, I can’t buy a graphics card now because of all this and always wanted to start my own servers, lets do that… and now CHIA is in the way causing another problem… *facepalm"
It’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask.
Historically, the datahoarder/homelab community has found that sata cards have been low quality bottom barrel garbage that were especially prone to corrupting data. While it’s certainly possible to have a good sata card, in practice the safest and simplest thing to do has been choosing any HBA with a 9200 ship and putting a fan on it.
I do not currently know of any known sata cards that are solid choices, though I haven’t looked either. There are probably some that are perfectly fine. But only trust reviews from people using an error detecting filesystem, like ZFS or BTRFS. That’s the only way you can be sure.
The other advantage of having a SAS capable HBA, is that SAS2 expanders and expander/backplane combos (like the ever popular supermicro BPN-SAS2-846EL1, are an option, allowing you to connect far more disks than would normally be possible with some shitty x4 pcie slot card. Every so often ancient server cases with lots of hard drive bays become quite affordable, and thus are attractive to people that have far too many hard drives for a hobby. The intel RES2SV240 was especially popular as an expander. With SAS protocol you can connect a silly amount of devices if you really need, whereas with sata, you have only what you have.
That is good to know. I mean there is a reason why there is server grade equipment and home grade stuff too… I wish there were more server home stuff per say, like an in-between… I guess the 9200 chip is just it. I also do find SFF-8087 much easier to work with in a 2U case.
I think a used DELL PERC H200 makes sense. There are some cheap ones out there not in IT mode yet which is what I can do and save myself the 30$ extra for having someone do it for me.
Just want to know, does this procedure seem good to you?
I’ve never flashed a card myself, and the wine I had seems to be hitting surprisingly hard, so sorry, I can’t really offer a good evaluation right now.
I believe there’s a walkthrough somewhere in this channel though: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKHE9DEep52XlmwLbZUKvyw]
“flash LSI 9210” also brings up other videos on youtube as well.
haha… All good… I mean, I had myself a Ryan Reynolds Vasectomy drink and made it strong so… I do understand LMAO… I’ll check out the video…
And for anyone who wonders what that drink is all about…
enjoy!! lol
they are LSI 9220-8i and you’d just need to crossflash them. I run one in my TrueNAS box and its been rock solid… they’ve gone up in price though, mine was $25 shipped.
Hi thanks for sharing that info @ThreeDee . Do you have the crossflash procedure by any chance?
I presume like, most other HBA cards these get hot as well and will need active cooling?
no heat issues at all …
Just a few days prior to your post I ordered some used DELL PERC H200. If ever I have issues with those then I’ll definitely checkout these LSI 9260-8I / LSI 9220-8I…
they are pretty inexpensive and very reliable cards …I’m currently running 4 SATA drives and 1 SAS drive off of my card
