Lots of small HDD vs 1 big one

context

I currently have 3 2tb HDDs and 2 1tb HDD in my current open media vault nas (no raid or zfs or anything). I want to upgrade and possibly switch to true nas scale.

question

Should I get more 2tb hdds and use them with zfs or just buy an 8 TB HDD.

With the 2tb id have less gb per dollar (I don’t have much money) but I’d get better speed and redundancy. Also id probably have to get a pcie SATA card if I wanted to use them all and that would limit upgradability in the future.

Honestly?

If your budget allows for it, why not double or triple with a 3x8TB setup? Saves you money, a bit of power, and it would cost you around $110-$150 per drive → $330-$450 total.

Now, while this might sound like a lot of money, I am thinking you will have these drives for at least five years. By that time, SSDs will be the obvious choice as by then, 32 TB SSDs can be had for under $200 and the linear growth of HDD space is just not good enough to keep up with that.

Buying a 2TB drive will just mean you need a new one in a year or so. Go big now, if possible. Incidentally, a 2TB SSD costs ~$60-$70 now while a 2TB HDD costs $33-$50.

Backup is more important than redundancy. If you are on budget, go for backup, not redundancy.
Get the largest drive that you can afford.
