Lost all RAID arrays on Ubuntu/SmartRAID 3154-16i

I built an AMD based NAS system - run Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS.

The storage on the NAS is in three parts:

1. Video storage for external cameras (RAID-5 6 x 10 TB SATA with hot spare)
2. Backup storage for other systems (RAID-1 2 x 16 TB SATA)
3. Windows storage (RAID-1/0 4 x 19 TB SAS)

I had a 14TB RAID-1 array I used for backups, but I broke the mirror by removing one of the drives and created on addition RAID-0 array and left the other one with a missing drive.

Copied the data from the 14TB array to the new Backup array. Things worked perfectly. Used the 14TB drives to archive video data from primary NAS. I realized I could not use my external SATA docking station to read the data - so I decided to copy data back to my array and move it to the drive directly connected to my onboard SATA adapter.

Fast forward about two months to yesterday. I started my project on Friday, started copying data - finished around 1PM yesterday.

After receiving a slew of messages from my controller about failed drives - I removed my email from the controller SMTP settings. Rather than leave the array before connecting it to the onboard SATA, I decided to remove the array. I deleted the logical drive in maxView Storage Manager and powered my system off.

The system would not boot - none of the arrays in my /etc/fstab were present. I commented all three of them out and booted again. Looking in the BIOS - the arrays are gone. Once I booted, I found one drive with stale RIS data. I suspected that was keeping me from seeing the old arrays so I resolved that - but all arrays are still missing.

I suspect I will need to manually rebuild each array and hope the reconfiguration without initialization can recover my arrays. I was just hoping for a way with ARCCONF or maxView Storage Manager to recover my missing arrays.

There has been a case opened with Microchip - but I suspect to get the stock answer of rebuild your array, restore from backup. (no backup is present - don’t have that much storage) The primary reason I have RAID is to have redundancy to not suffer data loss.

It is rather ironic that doing something as minor as removing a single drive from an array would nuke the entire configuration.

I have log data - and a ton of admin experience. Did IT for > 40 years - in Unix/Mainframe/PC space. System-level programming, building systems from scratch, loading systems from scratch, etc. Managing SAN, NAS, RAID - even suffered through the loss of a RAID from a Dell firmware upgrade. (twice! - once was me, the other an associate)

This is my home system, no business was harmed in the creation of my NAS.

Just hoping to get some ideas before chatting with support on Monday.

You need an HBA, rebuilding an array runs the risk of drives repopulating out of order so you cannot run a header recovery from the array.

This is why experienced IT managers purchase HDD’s from multiple vendors in multiple batches to minimise simultaneous drive failures from drives from the same batch. My primary backup is RAID6 and has a max of 2 drives per vendor per batch.

I hope you’ve used the SmartRAID card as HBA, if your card is toast, so are your array’s I’m afraid

This is what you’ll need to do, but I wouldn’t use the term rebuild since it implies the recreation of parity data, you just want to reconstruct the array with all existing parity+data in place and only remake the raid metadata headers that are on the harddrives. I don’t think MaxView lets you do this through the GUI anymore so you’ll need to use ARCCONF to do it.

There’s another thread with @Romx where I was going to show how to do this but I’ve run into some unrelated problems that are preventing me from demonstrating how to do this on an adaptec card for the short term.

None of the drives in any of my arrays failed - all of them are present. I purchase Seagate drives mostly due to seeing major failures in my IT career with WD and other vendors.

I can dig into MDADM - my system houses spinning RAID arrays only, no MaxCache devices or SSDs.

There was no indication within maxView Storage manager that anything else would be disturbed. NOTE: I have managed Dell, IBM, HP and other storage arrays - without issues - except for that Dell firmware issue…

Here is the message from maxView Storage manager after deleting the device: (RAID-0 device for Array “E”):

Hi, the thread with @Romx is what brought me here. I have time, this is all my own data and my cameras are pointing somewhere else right now.

It is not easy to back up 120TB of data - not with my budget anyway.

I do not see a way in maxView - was planning on using ARCCONF. Getting more familiar with it the last two days.

Yes see. That state, ‘ready’ is what i believe is stopping my array from working correctly. I dont know why they lose themselves after a hot remove, or xorrupt the parity.

I just bought five 2TB drives, some spare cables and will be creating a “test” RAID-5 array and a “test” RAID-1/0 array and grabbing the storage block where the Adaptec metadata hides.

My plan is to use the blank drives to perform my recovery - graft the repaired metadata back onto my original arrays (if required) and see if I can recover my data.

Nothing in the controller or drives has changed (beyond the nuking of the metadata). I suspect my hot spare with the stale metadata had my old configuration - which I should have saved - but I have time, resources and expertise to fix this.

When I discover the solution - I will be happy to share it here.

I am an old bit twiddler from way back. Programmed in assembler for over 15 years. Been doing storage and low-level disk/tape access forever. Mostly in the mainframe and Unix realms.

Done binary editing of files, disk blocks, databases, etc.

If there is an easier solution - I will keep looking for it. ARCCONF does not seem to have the “SKIP INIT” option when creating a RAID array. I will see if the BIOS version of the management software can do the trick. If not - I suspect I can figure out what is hiding in the metadata. Even if they do not document it anywhere.

It use to, atleast as late as 2017 in version 2.x. I think arcconf version 3 is when the skip init command went away. I wonder if an older version of arcconf can be used on the newer cards.

Found a copy of arcconf version 2 - no luck finding the manpage for it. The ARCCONF CREATE HELP command shows the following:

Method : Initialization method for the logical device.Valid for maxCache.
Valid options include: BUILD, CLEAR, QUICK, and
DEFAULT. SKIP skips initialization (for recovery only).
Some controllers do not support all options of this parameter.

When my set of drives arrive - I will create an array - nuke it and attempt a re-creation of it using that option. Right now that is Monday - so it might be a few days before I find out if this will work.

Found the older version of ARCCONF on a server in France…

Since I am dealing with an Adaptec/Microsemi RAID controller - it appears that MDADM may not apply.

I think the thinking was that mdadm could have been used to import the hardware raid’s array directly, since it can read the adaptec raid headers and “reconstruct”… but I’m pretty sure that option is out the window since it’s the raid headers/metadata that seem to be the problem.

MDADM was out the window for me - since the metadata became the problem. Just doing research and waiting until my drives get here. Thanks for the old doc - it should be helpful.

When (if) I succeed, I will post the steps I did for my recovery. In great detail - just to get even with Adaptec/Microsemi for damaging my array.

In many - and I mean many years of storage management, I have not ever lost an array by removing a device. They did not go away immediately - I still had access to everything - I rebooted and poof! - they were gone.

I still enjoy Microsemi’s solution - upgrade your firmware on the controller and maxView Storage Manager. Um, how does that get my arrays back??? It does not, your arrays are gone - you need to recover from backup…

I wonder if upgrading the firmware on the 3154-16i will break the older version of ARCCONF. I ordered enough storage to back most of my missing data up - so I can try it - and downgrade if I need to. (if I can find downloads of the older firmware)
