So Found out today that vmug is shutting down at least in way to get licensing. So going to move my home production network to Proxmox (28 images) couple of the images will be going away vmware related. The hardware that runs the network is theardripper 1950 128 Gb Ram 2 gpu 710 and 2070 supper. The other host runs ryzen 5950 ecc ram 128 gpu 1030. I have couple test machine that have proxmox on that I am going to use start doing conversation. I was planning to use migration in proxmox.
If anyway has any recommendation or better way to do the convert?
For what worth to proxmox test machine is ryzen 5700 with intel a770 with 64 gb ram
Depends on your vm
if it’s Windows, then backup from within the vm to a NAS then restore as new VMs on new hypervisor
Same with Linux based
I have both windows and Linux. With promox I should be able to migrate images from esxi. That or I can use veeam to transfer images.
You’re going to talk to your machines?
I have have two test machines that rans proxmox intel zeon and am4 ryzen machine. Wanted to test things out. Also xcp-ng virtualization installed on another am4 system. I have couple machine that multi boot. All the machine spoke also has windows installed on. AMD 5700 was actually built to bedroom media center computer. Turns on don’t generally don’t watch things before bed.
For what worth I did start conversation. I converted same images that are not core to things just working. Converted WiFi controller, Wsus for old window images, and just now Lancache server. I have backups of the image right they were converted so I can back.
Had crash course in getting qemu agent working correctly. Linux image take bit on first boot. As redetect network cards. It actually type from vmware. It cause the Linux image not have ipv4 address when it comes up. The windows image did not have much of issue.
Also original had issue with turenas iscsi mounts. Caused by not remove mount from esxi side.
There is an import Wizard in proxmox 8 for ESXi… Not tried since I dont have VMware …
I would be interested to know whether or not the proxmox ESXi import wizard works on free license esxi installs. I know that the Veeam integration does not work on free license esxi.
I have been using the proxmox input wizard. It works very nicely. Original I tested veeam to migrated. Proxmox wizard gives you more options. The one issue I ran into exsi wizard if the esxi host in vcenter point storage connection vcenter. Point just single host will cause the import wizard to fail.
For my purposes, this is a standalone ESXi host. no connection to vcenter at all. I inherited a problem machine and want to migrate away from esxi as simply as possible. but I do not know if the proxmox importer will play nice with a free licensed ESXi host.
Do you have enough hardware to have test machine? That is basically what I am doing right now. Then create a test image To transfer. That you don’t care about. I am really not sure if that would work depend on what api it is useing.
Also just figured how I wanted to get nas server from proxmox. Had two nic connected to different bridge on the same network. Seemed figured how to get it stable.
I do not yet. but assuming the boss approves the funding requests I will have it. and I can move those machines via backup and restore. but that is much more time consuming than moving them all at once in a near live configuration.
What you wanted to do would work. The question I have is free license does not give you access to certain api. I don’t understand what api proxmox is using to do the importing. For most part I would try proxmox wizard it pretty either will or will not work.
