Looking to give linux a go! help and advice required though :)

so im looking at trying linux... again tbh i never liked ubuntu so when i did have it i never really found a liking to it, reminded me to much of samsung android skin.

i like the look and operation of arch but unsure and afraid of all the hands on code commands to use it but i hear its very full of power and stuff so its one of the best ?

also would my hardware be compatible with it?

Use GNU/Linux Mint Cinnamon if you want something simple/easy

What are you trying to do?

Linux runs on almost anything

and just install stuff on a virtual machine to try it out

Your hardware is fine, especially with the newest line of NVIDIA cards.

Personally, I'd recommened Ubuntu Minimal. Now before you go off and install it, you need to learn what desktop enviroment you're going to prefer. Searching KDE, XFCE, Unity (Ubuntu's default), and GNOME will give you insight as to what you want. You can also theme these environments. I'd go look at /r/unixporn.

The problem wouldn't be GPU or mobo it would be networking. Luckily thats barely a problem anymore.

Look into Netrunner Rolling if you want Arch. Look into Netrunner Release if you want Debian.

Look into Netrunner, is my general statement. Best KDE Environment I have ever used and it has Wayland.

im used to both mac and windows. so possibly a eniroment similar to that or a hybrid.

and what i want to use linux for is for hdd health checks and to use as a more customised OS. i used to mod windows xp back in the day and same for vista but with newer windows releases its bloddy hard now. i want to make or customise a OS to what i want and use it for.

im doing alot of photo editing and video edit production currently and game alot! thus the 1080 obviuosly haha.

but i also want to migrate off windows ive never liked it ive always loved mac but due to the lock down of the OS to apple signed hardware only and my parts most likely never being hackintosh supported linux is my best option. i just want to get into the nitty gritty and learn hardcore haha, i also want to touch up on my coding skills so yea.

sorry if this reply is a bit of a stretch currently doing 100 things at once.

Photo: Darktable (better than adobe by far)
Video: Blender

Aye, I believe I understand. The desktop environment that would most likely suit you then is XFCE (lightweight) or KDE.

Now for the actual OS, I still recommend Ubuntu Minimal, or Arch.

FEDORA with KDE or XFCE atm little research but from some light research this is the result ive found so far. as im not experienced enough obviously to make my own os [ arch ] talk about biting off more then u can chew.

Look at Netrunner. Seriously.

arch does seem good as i then know exactly! wtf is going on my system but i heard community support is low for newbs?

yea im gonna download virtual box and run them all i think

Using Arch isn't exactly creating an OS, but more so starting with less than what you'd get with something else.

I'm not a fan of Fedora because you can't things such as good drivers off the bat.

If you need help, the Arch IRC channels usually have some good people around.

Okay well you can't really do gaming on linux, at least it's not nearly as easy as on windows

for the other stuff, I assume photoshop, and something that only runs on windows, so you'll need a windows VM for that

You can do a GPU passthrough potentially, but that's a slight pain with nvidia

and otherwise, you can make GNU/Linux however you want, just look up some tutorials, but cinnamon is already kind of like windows

If you want true and total control over your OS, you'll need to compile Gentoo from source

Thats kinda bullshit, but OK

Alternative tools. Blender, Darktable, it goes on.

Don't do that.

What Aremis is saying is very true. I myself run a dualboot. I find myself using Windows for gaming though because the amdgpu support for the R9 390 is very poor.

Not even close to what you get with adobe sadly, need to keep pestering adobe to at least have some kind of release for linux

and ya...gaming on linux still is shoddy mostly just native support, nvidia does have been drivers though

Fedora 24 Workstation Gnome 3.20 you can install the Nvidia drivers from the http://negativo17.org/nvidia-driver/

i gave some online "what are you" serveys and i keep getting redhat. which looks interesting. just gotta download all the distros and try them out i guess on VM

Don't use redhat for home use, instead go with Fedora if you want to go down that line.
Fedora is fine for newbs also, but I second Mint just for the sheer amount of ubuntu-line troubleshooting and documentation available when you start googling for fixes.

I have been running Manjaro xfce4 for the last 2 months Arch based rolling release.
Mint / Ubuntu with 4 different desktops each I have tried and they only lasted a week at best, did not like Mint or Ubuntu.
If you are going to give different distos a try take a look at Manjaro.
And if you want to watch some youtube on Manjaro search Spatrys cup of linux, He has done a lot of videos on Manjaro plus other distros.

Arch based distros have a lot going for them give them a try.
