Looking forward to build a workstation for fast rendering based on CPU. Currently using 3ds Max and Vray Adv as renderer. Hoping for kind advise on the specs to spent on without buying unnecessary hardware. Thank you
I am lack of experience about computer hardware. I have been doing some study between Intel core i7 and dual Xeon but i couldn't decide which is the best to build for fast rendering. Lets say i have $1600 as budget, can i build one of those or are there something new that serve a better options. Really having hard time for the variety of choices in the market, am hoping for some expert's opinion on this. Your advise is much appreciated!!!
** Here is one sample list from where im gonna get my hardware. As reference purpose only, can suggest hardware which is not in the list.
I would have to say going with the $1600 budget I would stick to the intel core i7 6800K 12 core over a duel xeon set-up. If you go with a duel xeon almost $800 to $1000 is going to be spent just on the cpu motherboard and cpu cooler which means you got to squeeze everything else into a $600 budget. Don't quot me on this but I think Vray benefits greatly form gpu horsepower and gpu's can be pricey as well.
xeon e5-2670. on sale off ebay or amazon for about 200$ for a pair. on that part your off in your info. a dual xeon build would be a better choice considering how cheep the old xeons are now.
If you can find them for that cheep that would be pretty solid the only one I found on Amazon was $400 for a pair then the motherboard was about $330 then you need cpu cooler so it came out to about $700 or $800. Just make sure they aren’t used because the thing with xeon cpu is a lot of company’s put hundreds of hours of use on them then liquidate when something new comes along.
I think you got the right product I herd that one of the xeon cpu was being sold for dirt cheep right now just forgot what version it was. In terms of raw performance this should out pace a 12 core I would look into maxing out the amount of ram you want in this build now because ddr3 prices will most likely only go up from now on.
Thank you for the information, i found that quite a helpful lead for myself. Might wanna try to put it on myself when im more free. Actually if i want to go for another build with single processor of intel i7 series as rendering machine, which motherboard and graphic card you would suggest for optimum use. That one i would be getting all the first hand products and the budget set around $1100 Thanks again for replying to my post =)
Hi, i did found out that my initial budget is quite insufficient for the dual xeon setup. haha Indeed, i myself would like to try out with the GPU horsepower but the cost is abit over terrifying for me now. Thanks for entertaining my post and giving all the advise. Anyhow, is it a better option to go for DDR4 instead of DDR3?
Well you wont notice much of a difference between ddr3 and ddr4 ram however ddr3 ram is on its way out so price will rize significantly on ddr3 where ddr4 prices will remain consistent for a while. The most budget friendly of the 12 core processors right now would be the 5820k its a slightly older chip set but price to performance ratio is pretty darn good. I would personally go with an Asus board mostly because I have never run into a problem with one and they have been around for a long time. At the $1100 price point something like this, http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NKXPzM You can pick any Nvidia gpu at the start the point is you have a way to see what’s on the screen because the 12 core don’t come with integrated graphics. Then when gpu prices go down or the is a sale you can get a better graphics card with out having to worry about upgrading the processor.
find a cheep gtx 980 or 70 and grab a xeon e5-270. even a single cpu will run very cheep. after that you should be ok with a basic rendering setup. but if your using sony vagus pro. you'd want an amd card for that rendering bonus. 1100 budget is solid if you find a cheep 2011 mobo and pair it with the xeon. and you can get 2 sets of 16g's of ram for like 80$ a pop these days. just look around newegg, amazon and ebay for the best deals and hot watch items.
Nice choices for cpus and motherboard. Only $485 spent. And DDR3 ECC is dirt cheap on ebay as well. And he could get 64 GB or ram for around $100.00. The more ram the better. Now still leaves around $900 for vid card, case, and storage.
Honestly, IF you can utilize all those cores, then there isn't even a contest. The only single CPUs beating those dual Xeons are the 1700,- Dollar 10 core 6950X and maybe the 8 core parts when close to 5GHz. Everything else just gets it's ass kicked.
Dual 2670s are 150,- or something, just make sure to get the newer revision. Boards are from 300,- to 500,- depending on features. I can say first hand the ASRock and Asus motherboards I am using in my machines are both solid choices. Memory is cheap. GPU is pretty much irrelevant if I understand correctly so an AMD RX4X0 would be my weapon of choice there, preferably sapphire nitro because low noise, solid and fangirl.
Yep. Dual E5-2670s is the perfect choice. 4k export of MPEG-2 can only utilize 6 cores for maximum efficiency. You start seeing diminishing after that and 4k export of h.264 tops out at 8 cores.
