Hey everyone,
Hope all is well. I currently have a supermicro x9scm-f motherboard with an E-1220 v2 CPU and 16 GB ecc memory in my first home server. I was contemplating upgrading that as I am running jellyfin and was needing to do some transcoding but I the CPU can’t really do 4k transcoding and I can’t install a video card because the board only has pci-e x8 slots. I have an extra rx 580 which I know is not great but better than nothing. However, I can’t use that because of the board compatibility. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a possible new upgrade on some used components that would fit the microATX form factor, ECC memory, and hopefully an intel processor with quicksync or something a little more modern and capable of using the rx 580?
I have been using linux the last 2 years and really enjoy it. Working on projects like this make it worth the hassle at times as I like the puzzle of fixing things. However, I don’t know enough about server hardware to know what to buy and what reasonable prices should be. I want to learn how to use docker, virtual machines, proper backups for multiple OSs, users, etc and other fun server stuff and possibly see if I can transition my work field from chemistry to something more related to computers, possibly computational chemistry or something with linux.
Money is a moderate factor but if it is a reasonable price for the value than it is more feasable, preferably under 500 for all three components if that is possible.
Thanks for any input,
RS
