Ok so in the next two to three months I'm moving my PC to another part of my room so it won't be hooked up to my AV receiver and my TV (will be building a HTPC to fill that gap). I am currently using the Sennheiser rs 170 as my daily driver but i want to keep them with my AV receiver and have something wired and more music oriented if that's even a thing. what I'm looking for is...
Good bass almost bass cannons but not too much
something that can take a good hard kick without distortion
Good for long sessions maybe 6 to 12 hours
styles and genres I'll be throwing at them
Hardcore Techno
Electronica
Trance
Eurodance
Rave
And the guilty pleasure bubblegum pop.
Thanks for any input i get and many many thanks if this gets answered on a show.
I am guessing that you are in England, right? I will see what I can put together. What would be the best idea is to get a dac/amp with the headphones. I will look at prices and stuff there and report back.
Philips O Neill Stretch. You will likely have to go to eBay to find them. I don't think they are being produced anymore. These headphones are currently my favorite headphones. They are super comfortable and IMHO sound as good as most $200 dollar headphones they have rich sound w/o being overly heavy on the bass. ( just as you said you were looking for ) they are great for talk and music alike. and for the price you cant beat them. One thing I will say is that the chord on them sucks but if you get an inexpensive Headphone extension cable from mono price cut the female end off then solder that bad boy on to the main driver ( Super Easy solder job ) that problem is solved.
A tip if you are going to solder on a new cable the screws are in the inner part of the can in the 4 corners under the thin cloth that covers the speakers you will need a med sizes philips screwdriver.
I haven't heard good things about the sound of the Stretch. It is one of those gimmicky headphones whose selling point is not sound (hell, it is in it's name, Stretch. They obviously aren't talking about the sound with that).
M-50, I am not a huge fan of that sound signature. It's are not neutral enough for me (generally considered to be colored). The M-50x has even more bass than the M-50, but a bit more refined in general. However, neither is something that I would consider to be in the same class as the HP150. Though, if you want more bass than neutral, then I would think about the M-50x, but the DT770 is another option for that category. The HP150 is more refined, more detailed, more neutral, and faster.
For a dac/amp, if the E17 is a bit expensive for you, the e10 and the e7k sound very good and are a bit cheaper. If you want to spend a little more, you could look to the modi/magni schiit stack.
Well it's not that the E17 is expensive it's just that the budget was for headphones I would have a separate budget for the amp/dac and i was wanting a few more options on the headphone side.
I am however liking what I'm seeing in the reviews for the SOUNDmagic HP150 here
Ok just had a look on ebay and I could get the dac for £10ish with some points I've saved up so going with the dac being as good as bought any other headphones in the £250/$400 range i could also look at?
V-MODA makes some bass-y headphones. The Crossfade LP2s can actually shake if running through an amp with the bass boosted just a hair.
The 600 ohm variant of the Beyerdynamic DT990s have some bass as well. Very comfortable as well (I've worn the Pro variant for many, many hours at a time).
