Looking for some advice, 4690k + Z97 vs 6600k + Z170

As the title says im looking for some advice between these 2 setups. i currently have the first setup and ive been looking at deals online and ive found some nice 6600k + msi z170a mobo deals. wondering if its worth upgrading considering i just built this system in august.

There would be no reason to go from haswell to skylake

Thats a pretty straight forward answer. Could you elaborate?

Well do you want to pay a bunch of money for 5% more performance and USB 3.1?

You're going to get about 5% increase performance in syntethics benchmark going from Devil's to Skylake so it's not worth to invest your money for a basically no sensible performance increase in daily use. But if you desperately need the feature only the new platform can provide (additional 20 PCI express lanes on the chipset, PCI express 3.0 x4 M.2 slot, USB 3.1 and so on) you just have to switch platform.

If you can fetch the near-new price for the 4690k + Z97 combo that you have (For instance you bought the combo for 280, you can sell it for 240/250) you could do it if you at least use one of the new features available on Z170.]

Personally I would stick to the 4690k as I have no use for the Z170 features at this point in time

Upgrading from a 4690K to a 6600K doesnt realy make much sense indeed.
In terms of raw cpu performance, there isnt much of a diffrence.
Your money would be better spend wenn upgrading some other parts like your GPU for example.

Of course Skylake is the newer and better platform, with dmi3.0.
But if you are currently on a 4690K, then its not realy worth to upgrade.
Better to spend your money else where on the system.
