Looking for Raidcontroller with Linux support

Hi everyone.

I have an ancient IBM M5014 Raidcontroller and the software to manage it was buggy from the start. Now trying to build it from the AUR failed since the dependencies for the project are messed up.

I am looking for a new Raid controller for 8 SATA discs and at least 256MB Cache and Raid5 support, that has a nice linux compatible GUI to manage the controller.

Also if possible it should not be to expensive since I want to buy it as a private person not for a company.

I am really looking forward to you suggestions.

Look at Promise, they’re managed out of band. No need to compile any tools on the host OS. They have their own CPU, OS and web GUI. Some even have their own network interface port.

Otherwise, you might want to look at what distro you’re running. Most raid hba have utilities for Enterprise grade distros like RHEL (Centos), Suse, etc.

Thanks, but I decided on a workaround. I use a CLI to manage the most basic functions and pass the controller through to a Windows VM when I really need the GUI. This way I can avoid installing all the nasty dependencies on my Linux host system and still manage it with a GUI.
On the upside I wrote a cronjob that notifies me if the health of the array degrades.

Why not just use ZFS?

I have no idea how ZFS works. I might have a look.
