I know this gets asked a lot but it’s not really a ‘I have a server, now what?’ sort of question but more just looking for new ideas of things to try. I already have a few things running on my server I’m just looking for something to have a play with.
Things I already have:
NAS
DNS/DHCP
Mail server
Web server
Plex
Bittorrent sync
utorrent
Proxy server
VPN server
Owncloud
PXE server
Firefox sync server
Things I’m not interested in:
Game servers
VOIP servers
FTP
Home automation
Really anything for public use as my upload speed sucks so it’s really only useful for local stuff or for a single remote user (ie. me)
So yeah, any ideas would be great or just share what services you use on your network and how you use them.
How about something like this? https://boinc.berkeley.edu/ "Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. It's safe, secure, and easy"
Get a 2nd internet connection and bridge it, that will keep you busy for a while? Im going to assume your doing regular backups of your computers to the server?
Well I have pretty expensive DSL so I can't afford to get a second connection and have a phone line installed and all that, besides they're upgrading the internet around here soon and I'm not really sure how that's going to work yet. Would be fun though :D
If you ever compile anything on your main box I'd run incredibuild or one of the open source alternatives. I think it would run on your desktop, but take advantage of the server cores to increase the core count used for compilation.
