hello everyone, like the topic suggests I'm looking for an am3+ motherboard that supports gpu pass through. I would like it to be under 200$, and support 32gb of ram. anyone have any ideas?
I think you just need to make sure it supports AMD IOMMU but i think it more down to whether the CPU supports it.
Maybe a ASRock 970 Pro3
Keep us Posted on how you go getting the GPU pass though going.
I have the Msi 970-gaming and it supports it. Also had the 970A-G45 or 46 and it supported it as well. Stay away from Asus, they messed with the iommu tables and are a bitch to get working correctly
thanks for the advice, my current board is asus.
looking at the Asrock fatal1ty 990fx killer, this is a nice board. just hoping there will be some left after the holidays!
For the record....
Asrock fatal1ty 990fx killer, 8370 cpu
Works like a charm although I can't use the M.2 feature because of other hardware things I need, but I knew that before I bought the board.
Yeah, for your kind of setup, m.2 is a no go. I was just merely suggesting a working configuration. It's still a good setup nonetheless. Or one could wait for ZEN.
Do you have some source from this?
Because thats interesting.
I know from one of the boards I tried to use that this is true on some of their board, but I do believe the high end boards like the ROG boards don't suffer from the IOMMU table problem, like Nvidia and their drivers Asus refuses to fix the problem but they do offer a beta BIOS that is suppose to fix it....but it's now a few years old and didn't work on the board I tried which was a M5A 99FX Pro R2.0 MB.
I have a Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, but i have not tried pci-e passtrough yet.
since i dont have a second gpu which is suitable for it.
Good luck, I wish I had back all the hours I beat my head against the wall trying to figure out why it wouldn't work, bought the new Asrock MB and it worked on the first try, it really is a nice setup, after I solved my Win 7 issues with FO4 I've now played it a couple hundred hours running in the KVM....works great.
Yeah well i do run allot of virtual machines, but thats on a Windows host with software like VM-ware or Virtualbox.
AMD VI is enabled, and i can passtrough io etc.
But i haven't tried to do physically pci-e passtrough of a gpu in KVM on a Linux host for example.
Thats ofc a diffrent slice of cake, I need a second gpu for that firstly.
PCI-passthrough works on the Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, I tried myself. It's a good board.
seems like that'd be a pain on AM3+ since you'd literally need a second GPU to do it
The platform ( AMD or Intel) makes no difference, nor the socket, to do a GPU pass through you need two GPUs, one for the host system and one for the guest, while CPUs with a integrated GPU will work for the host system it's not the preferred method since your robbing CPU and memory from a system that your trying to get every ounce of horsepower out of, but it can work depending on your needs and intended purpose....but you still need a second GPU for the guest OS.
Good to know ty. ☺
will this work for the non evo version? that's the one I have.
M5A 99FX Pro R2.0 is the MB that I tried to use and it did not have the necessary IOMMU tables to allow the pass through to work, if that is the board you have chances are it will not work for you either, I'm not the only person who had the issue with that board....otherwise it was a great MB.
It's not just that board but that brand on that socket. Personally I've just but a ban on Asus for me.
