I can hear my HDD rather clearly when loading programs and such. But the main thing that bugs me is when playing games my HDD seems to make a kind of tweeting sound when moving the mouse around. Rather annoying. I am looking for a HDD in the 500gb range. Oh I currently have a 500gb Western Digital HDD. Don't remember the model though.
Sounds liek you have a WD Black, they are the fastest WD drives but they make an annoying clicking sound when the seeker is seeking.
Either a Seagate Baraccuda or a WD blue should be fine, I have had both and I cant here them.
If you really wanted as silent as possible then either of the Seagate or WD or Samsung Green 5900 rpm drivers are more quiet but are slower.
SSD's have come down in price, I suggest you get a 120gb instead for a game drive and leave you current HDD for storage. That way its not just silent but blazingly fast.
also, if you don't have a gaming case, suspend your hdd by some rubber bands, it should quiet it down a tiny bit.
If it's not an OS drive, get a WD Caviar green 5200RPM. Very silent compared to the Caviar Blues, and plenty of speed for normal use.
Hmm I don't like the idea of downgrading in speed. I use my PC for playing games and browsing the internet and that's it really. I'm going to check out the Seagate Baraccuda and WD Blue.
Yeah, the faster drives tend to be noisier. I have two WD Caviar Black drives in raid 0, but I'm using a 240GB SSD for a boot drive so I only ever hear the Caviar Blacks when I'm loading steam games or other programs and applications that are installed on the hard drives. I think it sounds cool though, lol. It's a high pitched sound...it almost sounds like a laser charging up in my opinion.
It totally depends on how loud the rest of your PC is. My PC is inaudiable apart from the Hard Drives. I can tell you for a fact that the WD Blues are quite noisy, if you want a really silent drive then you have no option but to downgrade the speed. The performace loss is not noticable for everyday use though.

Does gaming fall under the everyday use category?
Yes. I can't really tell the difference between a game loading from my SSD vs loading from my 5200RPM hard drive.
Not sure about that, since Ive moved Steam from my HDD to my new 'game' SSD drive it is allot faster and really nice, specially on games liek TF2.
Well I thought I would have a reccommendation but they pretty much covered it. So yeah... what they said.
