Ok i currently have a netgear dg834g v3 router. It sucks for gaming as it blocks some of my games. Im looking at getting a new one, ive seen the Dlink DIR-615 and the Dlink DIR-635. I have no idea about routers and whats better so are these any good and if not can u suggest any other ones that are around £30-£50.
Linksys WRT54gs (v7)
and then install dd-wrt firmware on it.
If you are looking for wireless N, I would get a Netgear WNR834B v2 <-- I have 2 of these.
I like the WRT54GS, If you want a "new" router, the V7 would do fine.
I would suggest getting an older one from ebay. (v2 v3)
I have Dlink DIR 635, working great :D
I have this belkin router which i love http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833314022
But i would switch it in a heart beat for this asus router! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320011
i just bought a dlink dgl 4300 over the summer works good
i have the V7, very easy to put the firmware on, the v2's and v3's are beter hardware wise, but you have to get them on ebay, you can still pick up a v7 in a walmart for < $20, i got mine a year or two ago and it was liek $35, so they are probably even cheaper than 20.
and imo, everyone will say "get this router, its $80 and i love it!" and things like that, all you are doing is routing an internet conection, a 20 dollar router will do about the same thing as a $100 one if your using it for home use.
I agree.
I have yet to actually buy a "NEW" router. All of my routers I got on Ebay. The Netgear I found as low as 25 bucks.
Depending on how many computers you have in your home, will vary your requirements.  Most homes these days have anywhere from 1-3 computers, consoles, satellite receivers, etc.
with the higher bandwidth cable connections (16Mbps+) we are getting to a point where these devices will start to lag, and better code and equipment will be needed.  I laugh at some of these N routers. (the WNR834b for example) The 4 port switch on them is only 100Mbps, while the N Wireless is up to 130Mbps.Â
Basically you really just want a router that does everything you want it to.  I recommend any router that can be "upgraded" to DD-WRT, (personally I like OpenWRT) It opens up a world of networking abilities that you won't have with the Brand Firmware.
this is a great thread to read im learning XD!!!!
i know this is a bit off topic, but do u have any idea why my main computer can only use 192,168.1.146 as its local ip? this only happened after switching to ddwrt, and my mom fucking up the internet on her computer and me having to fix it (no idea why that would change mine...)
First thing I would check is the DHCP logs, secondly; if you are setting a static IP address for your main PC, use 192.168.1.(2-99) because the DHCP scope starts at .100.
The DHCP logs would tell you what machines are using what IPs on the network.
Unless you have some sort of static routing rule on your router. (i doubt it)
oh god please don't buy dlink. DIR series has terrible firmware.
