There WILL be bottlenecking from anything over what you have right now. 1.8 GHz just won't cut it....maybe if it was a laptop, which it clearly isn't. So as of now, it all depends on what you want to play, how much funds you have, and if you're willing to get a new CPU. I'd recommend the 9800GT. It's practically universal. It's cheap, it can play the high end games at the standard resolutions, and it's new. I'd suggest waiting until after Core i7 comes out, getting perhaps an E8400/Q6600 and then getting your new graphics card though.
EVGA makes single and dual slot 9800 GT cards, both going for around $115-$150. The PCI-e 1.0 might not unleash the full potential of the card either, but you should still get some pretty kickass gaming. But once again, the CPU will definately bottleneck the performance. Like 21DD23 said, the minimum power requirement for a 9800GT is 450 watts. 500 watter's go for about $20(low end) to $70(high end).
GODDDDD. Not to be rude, I just hate when people do that. I'd like people to actually explain WHY. It's like, "Hey I think my monitor's a bit dull" "Get a new monitor" -_-. Waste of words. No offense, I'm not trying to be mean, all I'm saying is that some more elaboration would seriously be nice. For instance, EVGA and XFX both offer a Lifetime warranty on their products, and EVGA has 24/7 customer service. The 4850 performs a bit lower than the 9800 GTX+, but is comparable to the 9800GT, which is cheaper by almost $50 and can perform better when overclocked. Something on the lines of that would be nice.
oc your processor if u can get it in the like 2.2-2.4 range i wouldn't think you would have any problem with a 9800gt.
honistly iv seen articles on building 500 dollar gaming systems were they use the 1.8ghz core 2 processors with 8800gs, gt's and 4850's and they claim it wont bottleneck the gpu.
oh wow didnt expect people top reply that fast thanks nice forums
ah so i see i will get bottle neck but it will still be better than my 8600gt correct? I will be buying the evga version scince thats my favorite company i would go with the xfx one but the plastic enclosure looks cooler and whats the diffrence between the 9800gt and the 9800 gt hybrid power the hybrid power is only 5 bucks more
ummm 8600 GT? is that the faulty chip along with the 8400? if yes, tell EVGA it died randomly and tell them to send u a $100 evga gift card. Lol Jk...anyways, 9800 GT is worth it, if u get an nvidia mobo and better PSU, u can SLi it with 8800 GT
You should definitely get better performance compared to your 8600GT 256mb (I have the exact same 8600GT. It sucks. Lol). But you definitely might want to look into a new processor or overclocking. The E7200 is about the same price as the 9800GT (go figure) and can be overclocked to 4.0 GHz+ in some strange yet impressive cases. If not, buy an aftermarket cooler and overclock away =]. We have a forum on that too. Oh by the way, Welcome to the forum.
dude, the way i see it is you shouldn't even upgrade your video card at all. first off, everone who says get 4850 or 9800gtx is wrong, because at a 19 inch resolution the 9800gt is like the most high end card you can get anyways, and i still think your cpu would be bottlenecking it. if i were you, i would invest in a new cpu, and anyways, if you're playing source games they use the cpu more than the gpu anyways.
ok can someone explain to me exactly what bottle necking is i get the concept but its not clear to me so now i am considering a new processor over the gfx card ahh im so lost should i not even upgrade its jsut i wann play cod4 on max and crysis (not intending max)
so if my gpu is at 100% then how much % do u take away for the bottlenecking and how much % for the pci slot being 1.0?
and overclocking seems way too outta my league too scared to do it i dont even know how to do it
I never recommended the 9800 GTX. I just compared the 4850 to it. The 4850 is good if he plans on connecting it to an HDTV since it has onboard sound build into the card and comes with HDMI. Also, it will most likely get better stock performance than the 9800GT for sure. AND he never said he plays steam games, so you'd have to look at it with a wider range of games. I think EVGA's 9800GT HDMI edition will go nicely. It's $5 more but comes with the HDMI dongle and SPDIF cable. (then again if your motherboard does not that the SPDIF out connection, then you're ****ed.)
Quick quite from wiki. Sorry. I'm a bit too lazy and I wanted to make sure.
"bottleneck is a phenomenon by which the performance or capacity of an entire system is severely limited by a single component." In this case, it's your CPU.
my mobo is asus p5vd2 mx se i you guys can find some info out idk
so what about that cpu 9800gt combo at tiger direct because myy mobo dont support quad core but i might not get that combo schince the money is the biggest issue ah this is what i get for not knowing my computer parts ah i was a noob we all learn from our mistakes
i have just bought a gaming laptop the asus g50 2.0 core 2 duo and 9700 gt 4gb of ram vista 64 200gb 7200 rpm thats one thing thats holding from upgrading because my laptop handles crysis at medium very smoothly ahh im so lost
