Pretty much what the title says. But to clarify I am getting back into writing/typing and I would like to find the most budget machine for typing on the road. I can spend upwards of $600 USD on it, but I was wondering if say a $130 special on groupon would be completely OK for something that would only be used on writing and the occasional email check. Keyboard size is not an issue.
if you're just typing, it should be fine whatever you can find.
I remember I have an old laptop where the hard drive died on it. If I replaced the hard drive and put a linux kernel on it, that should suffice right?
totally, a ssd would be even better. if it's old enough i would worry about the battery.
I have an old t400 and I put an ssd in it.. The difference it made, its as if its brand new.
Mhhh so if i go linux with an ssd would size would you recommend?
*Edit: and any Distro you would suggest for a minimal layout?
linux doesnt usually take a ton of space. since you say the primary use is typing and email, i think a 120 gb would suffice.
Not a Chormebook unless you linux that up. If you have no internet on the road, you are possibly screwed.I don't recall how anal ChromeOS is about that...
SSD in the cheapest/lightest laptop you have is perfect. Or you can pick up a HP Stream 11, pretty nifty laptop, just need a microSD card if you need more room...
Good point, i need to look into that, but I think fixing up my old Dell with a ssd and linux on it is the best route. And sorry I refuse to buy HP, they have an awful record with me.
My only concern with an old laptop is the battery life. I've personally handled the Stream and I'm really impressed, but yeah... aside from it, HP has nothing but bad experiences from me. Like the fireball turbine of a computer that my brother insists on using...
I pointed towards the Stream because it has zero moving parts and has a good battery life while being dirt cheap.
Well i just found the HP stream 11.6" on groupon (refurbished) for $120. That is a very fair price to deal with the name. And you were correct Ace, the Stream has very favorable reviews.
I have an acer ES1-111M (version with the mechanical HDD, 250GB) and I adore it, I wanted a low power laptop for my personal taste and use of laptops, and this thing is sooo perfect for it. I got it or $180 at target a year ago, you can get them refurb off ebay for like $150 now. I put $70 into an 8GB DDR3L stick and it is without a doubt my favorite laptop I have ever owned.
