Looking at IBM Thinkpads any Suggestions?

Currently looking at laptops, I'm trying to move away from my HP DV7 causes it's big and bulky to carry. With the new laptop i'm going to be installing Linux and mostly web browsing, email and programming.

I began looking at the T420, T430, P70, P50. I need something mobile that isn't going to kill my back and lightweight for on the go.

Also my budget is a $1000 so I'm really trying to not go over it if I don't have too.

I've seen gently used Thinkpad Carbon X1's on craigs list for $600ish with a newer i7, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. From the pictures, they didn't even have wear on the touch pad.

I've been using a thinkpad e565 with mint 18.1 and been happy with it other than changing the wifi card for and intel one

A well modded T420 is quite nice. But a X1 carbon from 2015 is the lightest thinkpad you can get for a good price used. Check businesses selling of older laptops. You can find all different interesting machines.

I'd recommend the T430 over the T420 (I own a T420). The higher resolution screen is better and it has USB 3.0 as standard and the Ethernet port is at the back and not the left side (where it should be)
Depending on your home setup a docking station could be cool. The T420/430 has an expresscard slot so you could get something like this: Expresscard to PCIe x16 adapter

On the lenovo forums one of the users said the ssd can be upgraded but as for the ram I'm SOL cause its soldered which is not a big deal cause it comes with 8GB.

How's the touch pad? Like does it get in the way when you're typing. Cause I have that problem with my HP which is annoy as Sh##.

I saw the specs, now do you get all 6.5 hours out of it i mean does it last that long or is just 4 something hours when in use.

Yeah I've been looking at the T430 and it looks like its the better one of the two. And I do walk around with my 3 usb 3.0 drives which could come in handy.

The T430 is superior to the older laptops in most every respect, but IMHO, the keyboard on the T420 simply rocks! Only vintage tactile Alps keyboards feel better to type on.

Some folks will go to a whole lotta trouble to update their new ThinkPad with an old keyboard, because ergonomics and tactile feedback are important.

Yeah I'll be buying one in the coming weeks, currently looking at replacing the screen, battery, hdd & ram beforehand.

I have a question does it matter if it has a i5 3210M or i5 3320M cpu? Besides the higher ghz nothing seems to be different from my pov

An IBM 600X.

Or did you mean a lenovo thinkpad.

I use a Lenovo X1 Yoga thinkpad as my portable workstartion, runs vm's well and has good support for ubuntu. Battery has been rock solid for the past 9 months. Beast of a ultrabook/2-1 thing.

It hasn't been IBM for... Must be over a decade now lol. I dont get the fanboying them though- there are lots of notebooks that are as good or better.

I've been using and quite pleasantly surprised by a Surface Pro 2... Yeah yeah yeah, its a tablet, but its quite nice. The Pro 3s are even better and pretty cheap now. Like $700ish for a nice ultrabook/tablet.
Linux may be a bit hard to install built should work well enough.

AFAIK, there is a little more top end on the boost for both the CPU and the integrated GPU.

Many of us were issued IBM ThinkPads for work and they served us well for many years. They were built like tanks, at a time when the screens would quite literally fall off of lesser machines. When it came time to purchase a personal machine, I opted for a Lenovo ThinkPad. There were two primary reasons for this decision: 1) ThinkPads historically have had great Linux support and 2) my personal experience, over a number of years, with the performance and reliability of the ThinkPad series.

This doesn't mean that I am a fanboy, or that I would never consider an XPS13 DE, or a System 76 machine, if they presented a compelling reason to change. For example, I am very disappointed with Lenovo's decision to abandon the great tactile keyboards that they once used and I am also very disappointed in their decision to pre-install Superfish on their machines. These issues will weigh heavily on my next purchase decision and I may very well go with an XPS 13 DE on my next go round, unless someone else is offering a compelling Linux solution at that time.
