Evening All,
So I have decided in 2018 it is time to retire my x220, the device is still great but its old and I would rather it be living in storage than dead in a skip, I have grown a bit attached to the thing.
Now I am looking for something different for my next device, as I have learned Linux more and more I have found most of my requirements from a PC have lowered significantly, I don’t require as much GPU/CPU power now due to using i3 mostly, doing most of my work via the terminal etc, basically what drew me into Linux, adding into this I don’t play many new games anymore, either due to time or not being interested, my gaming started in 90s/early 2000s which is what I play a lot of now, none of these games are demanding, I think Morrowind is the most demanding currently, but I also play a lot of emulators via RPi.
Enter the GPD Pocket, it has good support for Linux, I would imagine the newer kernels and when we eventually hit Linux 5.0 this device should be extremely refined from a software perspective, I have moved back to Arch so I am generally on the stable/bleeding edge of hardware support, while been extremely lightweight.
For work I plan to use a dock setup, using the USB C port run a USB C Passthrough device to get power and video/audio, and greatly expand its I/O to allow microSD for emulators and images.
The small size appeals to me also for when I am sat on the couch or in bed, when I had a Nexus 7 I loved it, it was the perfect screen size but I always wished to have a keyboard and a full fat OS, the GPD is a similar size with a keyboard and any OS I want.
Furthermore with my family growing we are planning on travelling a lot more, and as we all know children take up a lot of bag space with their things, I think a portable setup consisting of my HD600s, Fulla 2 and this would be the perfect little portable setup.
With the above given, do you think this could be a viable setup for someone looking for something different, like many of you here I love to geek out over the weird things, and I think this is something that is usable and geeky, and with my two setup plans I think I have all bases covered.
What are your thoughts?
Many Thanks all and happy new year!
