Long term data storage

I have read and seen videos about long term data storage. From what i gather, USB flash drives are a bad way to store information in the long term. Is there a better way to store data in a way that will last? I don't care or have much trust in the cloud.

I've heard of people using blurays recently. I haven't looked into the longevity of the discs versus the shelf life of an unplugged hard drive, though.

Tape drives are a good option. Also just regular hard drives

I have a three fold plan.

  1. RAID mirror in server
  2. Weekly backups to external hard disk
  3. Burn blu-ray of static content once and dynamic every few months

Tape is both expensive and tedious. I've used it in a corporate environment for many years, you'll want to shoot yourself.

Yeah, I also use Blu-Rays for long term, to go along with my server, and my desktop which has has a tertiary backup drive as well.

I agree with how tedious tape drives are, especially when recovering specific data, but to answer his question it is the superior form of long term data storage. The only competition would be blurays.
