Logan and Wendell, Next Gen Video Game Consoles?

So guys I wanted to ask a question about what you see coming for the next gen video game consoles. I think that NIntendo will be the next big gen gaming console when release.

I have sort of been paying attention to this generation release, and the last gen, (which was the last gaming consul for me), and I have noticed a steady trend.  Also, I would like to drag Nintendo back into the conversation with saying that I am still waiting on their new release, and like Nintendo fashion, they are waiting on their release again.

So what I have noticed is that both main stream consuls have been moving more and more towards "home entertainment" systems.  Both consoles support netflex, and various other media streaming sources.  Also with the new release of Windows 10, it seems like Microsoft is trying to build a self contained environment that will eventually lead to streaming games between PC and Xbox's next gen console.  Also Playstation supports Steam and has had a history of pushing there consoles as a home entertainment console. Plus Playstation or Sony has sold hand held gaming consoles in the past.  Let us not for get the lonely Nintendo gaming system.  They are notoriously known for releasing their consoles a year or even two years after the main stream systems come out.  Nintendo also has done a lot or R&D with their hand held systems, although they do not sell their system as a home entertainment system, its not hard to add support for streaming media to a system.  However when they do release their systems they always release with a huge amount of release date games.

So what I would like to happen and what I see happing is both Playstation and Xbox moving towards streaming gaming systems.  However I think that Nintendo has already got a leg up on the competition with their Wii U.  With in the PC community, we are already seeing the move towards home servers, that hold massive amounts of videos and streaming of digital videos from both over the net and over the home network to hand held devices.

I think the Next Gen Gaming Consoles will be Pc based that hold the hardware that can run graphic heavy games and then streaming them to hand held devices.  I think that Nintendo will be the leading player with the release of their next gaming console.  Also their are emulators that can run all of the legacy Nintendo games (everything from NES to Nintendo WII) on the PC already.

So what do you guys think about Nintendo being the next big gen gaming console.

whole heartedly agree with you.i believe home server streamboxes are the next big thing. where there is one computer that could host the rendering of games to 2 or 3 tablet like devices or a tv.

By next gen, do you mean this generation (PS4/X1) or after this?

I hate to burst your bubble but I think the Nintendo will be the first game company to stop producing consoles at least in the traditional sense. I hate to break it to you but by looking at the evidence it just doesn't seem likely that Nintendo will be a big player for much longer. That seems to freak everyone out and make them all defensive, I guess because their Nintendo consoles treated them better than their parents probably did when they were young, but I digress.

Back to topic.... Leg up in the Wii U? No. Not at all. Okay, Nintendo released this console over a year before the "mainstream" consoles. Not one to two year after like you claimed. In terms of performance, especially compared to the PS4, it is very weak. It was a bit weak when it was released now it isn't even close. Plus, it isn't x86 like the rest of the consoles. That means it is more challenging to develop and release games for because a different version needs to be produced for it. Xbone, PS4, and PC are all X86 and have a decent amount of power behind them. The Wii U is a different architecture and much less powerful. So less support.

Additionally, Nintendo hates third party developers. Developing for a Nintendo product is worse than developing for Mac and iOS. The mandatory hardware gimmicks, the restrictive licensing, and everything else coupled with the different architecture and lower specs means developing for the Wii U is a pain in the ass and often times not worth it.

Plus, the sales aren't there. While sales have picked up somewhat, they still lag behind the PS4 and even behind the Xbone despite a year longer on sale.

This means that there are no games. There weren't even that many games when the console was released. That being said, the libraries for the PS4 and 'Bone aren't that substantial either, but there are more games out for those and more released all the time. This lack of games means not many people want to buy the console. Bit of a chicken and the egg situation here.

There are the first party Nintendo titles, but, and I know I'm gonna get mauled by Nintendo fanboys, they just aren't very good or interesting. Nintendo just releases the same damn game over and over and over again. Another bloody Zelda, another bloody Mario.... They retread the same ground again and again. It is horrible. People seem to be finally waking up to that fact. They want something new. Some of the games are fun, yes, not gonna deny that. However, why buy a new game when you have one already that is fun and basically the same? And, when there aren't any first party titles out there isn't that third party support to sustain them.

Like I mentioned above the 'Bone and the PS4 also suffer from rather miserable lineups but they are growing. Additionally, the PS4 has very good indie support and their PSN model is actually pretty decent. The fees aren't that bad and the free games and other content is nice. So there is more value there.

Nintendo has some interesting handhelds but that market is going to start drying up as well. Phones are gonna take over there and they already are as evidence by Nintendo patenting emulation. They are building a walled garden. They want you to play on their systems and their systems only. They know they are in trouble and are using this as a way to prop up a failing business model.

Nintendo financially is in a very bad way. They are losing money and I don't know if they will be able to rescue themselves. Who knows they may end up like Sega and just make software and the freaking toys and "collectors editions" that they seem to love so much. (IE things fanboys lap up).

They do have a new console rumored to be coming up but I don't know what to make of it. TBH I really don't know what they are gonna do with it. I highly doubt it will be anything particularly new, unique or innovative. I'm guessing it will be sort of a catch up with Sony and Microsoft.

The thing is the Wii U is for games (well that and forced social media integration but again I digress) and tbh that is a problem. What we have seen is people want a unified device for their living room. We don't want tons of boxes sitting everywhere that only do one job. That's why HTPCs are so nice. They do everything. That is really the direction I think things are going in and I don't know if Nintendo is willing to make that step. I think Steam machines, Linus and the PC in general are going to take over the living room and Nintendo may be left out in the cold.

the idea of a stream server really makes me want to put GPUs in a server and run GPU passthrough to virtual machines
