I've been trying to get Ubuntu Gnome to run on my Asus laptop with all the bells and whistles I need. I just finished installing nvidia graphic drivers so I can use the 750m on this thing to play some games, but after I rebooted, it got stuck in this loop during the boot sequence.
It says
* Starting CPU Frequency daemon cpufreqd [ OK ]
* Not starting fancontrol; run pumconfig first.
* speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
* Restoring resolver state ... [ OK ]
* Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ OK ]
* Starting APCI daemon [ OK ]
And the screen just turns off and on displaying this same text not booting into Ubuntu. Is there a workaround that someone here knows or should I just reformat?
EDIT: Actually, I think its already past the boot screen at this point because I'm able to type in my pass phrase for the encryption, but after that it the screen flashes with this weirdness.
looks like a typical boot to me
How did you install the drivers?
try using this source
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
I did not install from that source. I used the Ubuntu software center and installed the driver that said ("current version") and nvidia x server.
And yes it is a typical boot except for the flashing screen I get after the I type in the encryption key.
So you can't log in?
I would suggest instead of just reformatting trying to uninstall the drivers/reinstall by using a flash drive.
I couldn't figure out how to get to the system drivers booting from the flash media. I just reformatted.
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
This source didn't have any reliable way to install the driver packages. My attempts kept saying that the package doesn't exist after adding the ppa, so I used this source instead:
I rebooted after installing $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current and it started exhibiting the same behavior. I didn't format the OS with encryption this time so it instead kept locking up at the Gnome splash screen just before you log in.
I reformatted again and now I'm going to attempt to install from the software and updates window in Gnome.
Same behavior after enabling nvidia proprietary drivers from software and updates.
Is there some compatibility issue with this combination of Asus N550JV laptop, Nvidia 750M, and Ubuntu Gnome?
Alright, so just to update, this seems to be a Gnome issue. I have proprietary drivers working in Ubuntu Unity. This is weird that the same exact thing I tried to install on Gnome caused it to lock up.
have you tried installing gnome after getting the driver working in unity?
@Techy86uk: I'll try that next.
