Locating workstation in another room: low latency and reliable USB?

I’d like to place my SWorkstation in the server rack for a couple of reasons. For one, it’s a large E-ATX system, and I’d like to get the space back under my desk, the server rack has much less circulating dust, and the server rack also has a nice UPS.

For the most part, I can get by using a much lower-power system (either a laptop or a small and quiet intel NUC/Mac Mini type of system) for day-to-day stuff, but there are a few tasks that I’d like the horsepower of the bigger system (and a real GPU), one of which is gaming, most notably Microsoft Flight Sim.

I’d like to find a solution to have connect the monitors and USB peripherals reliably to the machine in another room. The cable run(s) between the locations would be about 40-50 feet.

There is fiber and 10Gbe throughout the house.

Obviously that is way too far for USB to work, natively, and would probably be pretty sketchy on the video side as well. I don’t need crazy fast latency, since I’m not playing FPS games competitively, but I’d really like to get it down to non-noticeable input and video lag.

Ideally I think i would have something like a Thunderbolt hub on my desk, which connects to the PC (located in the server rack a few rooms over) via some kind of thunderbolt-over-fiber contraption.

The only two products I have found that do this are 1) a very expensive Corning fiber optic cable, and the even more expensive Icron Raven USB extender, both of which have plenty of reports of flakiness and high latency.

Has anybody found a good solution for this?

Have you considered trying moonlight/sunshine on the low-power machine, with all peripherals connected?

I’ve never tried gaming with RDP but that might work too?

I’ve tried RDP, but even with fiber networking across the LAN, there’s plenty enough latency to make gaming not enjoyable.

Already a good discussion going on about this situation.

Try sunshine/moonlight. I find the latency to be but a few milliseconds, if your client is good at decoding.

I’ve thought about trying it, but it always came across as somebody’s hobbyist project, and I tend to avoid relying on software that is as such.

Is this actually a well-backed project that’s not just some dude developing in his spare time?

Check out the github and see if you like what you see. I’ve had good luck getting my few reported bugs fixed promptly on sunshine. Haven’t had any moonlight bugs to report.

If you don’t need more than 4k@60hz and can live with usb2 speeds an hdbaset extender will set you back 350-600usd … if you need usb3 and more and can run fiber you will need to spend at least the same amount for a single usb3 extender…

This one should also be able to do 4k@120hz (albeit 4:2:0) but most importantly 4k@60hz 4:4:4 over a single cat6 cable…

They only extend HDMI though…

I know Linus LTT (because he made a video/s about it) use an Icron dock so that he and his wife can have their rack mount computers elsewhere in their house.

Wendell also did some work with Linux to get the docks to also work with the Level1 KVM’s if that is also something else you need.

The Icrons were the items mentioned in the op as not being candidates … they are usb only and cost well over 1k for USB 3.x

They have both a DP and HDMI version.

Run some fiber and change ends as need as new stuff comes out.

These are USB 2.0 only and 4k@30hz. only, and cost in the upper range of the AV connect ones that for that price can do 4k@60Hz 4:4:4 or 1080p@120hz …

Straight from the specification page

Specifications

RANGE

  • Point-to-Point: Up to 100m (330 ft) over a single CAT 6a/7 cable

VIDEO

  • Resolutions up to UHD 4K, 3840 x 2160 @60Hz
  • Color: YCbCr 4:4:4 and RGB color support up to 10bp

USB DEVICE SUPPORT

  • Throughputs: USB 3.1 Gen 1: Up to 5Gbps

I will not argue against them being expensive but it is an option.

Right, the 4k@30Hz is for the HDMI one … unfortunately the Displayport One is not really for sale :frowning:
