Hi all, it's been a while and I think it's about time I become a bit more involved in the community. To kick things off I figured why not start out with something simple. I'm going to spend ~one month with KDE Plasma 5 learning the ins and outs as well as adjusting my workflow from Gnome. I'll post a daily update talking about what I've done throughout the day with KDE. As always there will be many questions and I would love to hear what everyone likes about KDE/What they do with it.
KDE is what I moved to after E17 gave up the ghost and stopped being fixable. KDE is pretty nice, but it uses 100MB plus of ram at idle on my laptop, making it a huge resource hog on the little 2GB intel Celery. Wayland works out of the box, and it has many features I quite like. Such as the pretty overall color and design scheme. Plus it's pretty light in terms of custom OS programs. It doesn't force you into a lot of crappy bundled terminal software or photo viewing software in my experience. However, I did install it manually from the repo source.
One thing I miss is having an auto sort windows button, which would auto sort my windows for most surface area of windows visible. However, E17 is still the only windows manager I have found with this extremely handy feature.
I have no experience with enlightenment, but I'm sorry to here that it stopped meeting your needs in a window manager. I like KDE so far, but there does seem to be some bloatware (more than likely Fedora Spins fault). I'll have to see what's not stock and remove it.
I intentionally use some of the bloatware. Like the file browser, Dolphin is pretty good. Their 'bloat' tends to actually be very feature-filled powerful stuff. It's just pretty heavy for a craptop.
KDE is not just a DE, it's a complete ecosystem of applications for Qt also. That has several huge benefits. The integration is really good and so is the performance. Also the quality of the KDE applications is getting really good. Krita is of course very popular because it is offered through Steam, but Karbon, the Calligra Suite, Kontact, KDE Connect, etc... are all contributing to the KDE Plasma experience. It's different, but it's good.
Today I was rather limited on time, however, I did delve into theming KDE to my liking. Currently, I'm using the Dark Breeze theme with Moka Icons. It's no perfect, but with the limited amount of time, I hope to refine it a bit tomorrow. Overall I have to say their theming is superior to Gnome's tweak tool. On the other hand, why can't I just right click on a saved picture to set it as my desktop background? It's a minor annoyance, but still, it's slightly inconvenient. Plans for tomorrow are to refine the theming, as well as, looking into the KDE connect application for android.
