Linux on imac g4

Hey guys.

Do any of you know of a modern Linux distro that would work on an old imac G4? I want to get the one I have running on the Internet for my kid so he can use the one he bought. It’s cool and all, but I can’t find a modern web browser that would work on it. He wants to play some games from his school’s website and maybe watch some youtube on it? Would it be possible?

Youtube is going to be hard to do for a G4. Newer PowerPC like the e5500 / 6600 are more capable for things like YT and HTML games.

For modern linux recommendations I’d use Void Linux. Just google or DDG Void Linux PPC. A lot of work has gone into it and now its finally setup completely. Otherwise use 10.5, use monolingual to strip the extra trash out, get perian installed, get Arctic Fox’s source, get git, get some tools installed over macports or brew as well as libraries, try to build arctic fox (I’d think it should, but it’ll take a while), and most importantly try to upgrade the hardware. Get an SSD and the fastest DDR1 ram you can find. Unless its DDR2?

If you have any questions there is a powerpc info / news thread full of people waiting for you bro.

Good luck!
