Mint is a more refined Ubuntu so in theory it should be about the same experience. Also, I just booted it up because I wanted to double check my information and the booting looks ugly with all kinds of output being displayed (which drivers are loaded and such). If you don't mind that then it should be okay for you. Yeah that should work. You're saying clone the image you have now, THEN plug the cloned image into the mac and boot, correct? make sure you do device-to-device if using clonezilla.
Yes that's what I mean. I have acronis true image
So you're saying it will work but look like crap every time it boots?
Make sure your version of Acronis supports Linux Filesystems (From my experience 2011 doesn't, but 2015 does). If it doesn't, Clonezilla is free. Here's what it is, it's called verbose and I haven't found a way to disable it yet. It will be line after line until eventually you see the ubuntu splash screen. https://jreypo.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/p4000-vsa_full_boot.png
I have Acronis 2014, how would I know if it supports Linux? It came free with the SSD from Crucial.....have used it twice now once for the mac and a second time for the windows PC now running mint
You could give it a shot. A quick Google search didn't reveal much, but trying it yourself won't hurt anything. I'm eating chinese and my fortune cookie said to Investigate new possibilities. Now is the time! It's a sign from the Linux gods.
Yeah I have the original HDD as a backup so not scared of messing anything up lol.
Alright, be sure to update this whether it works or not.
I will
Ok, so I went to the software manager and downloaded clonezilla, it did its thing and shows on the window as installed and gives me the option to remove it, great.
But, I can't find the damn program anywhere on my computer, lol.......
Honestly I have no idea what you did. I make a bootable Clonezilla CD (You can use this free program, http://www.imgburn.com/) and I restart my computer and then boot it. Based off what I perceive as your level of experience you will most likely want to watch a YouTube tutorial on Device-Device Imaging in Clonezilla. You shouldn't have to worry about the specific version as I haven't noticed any large changes in the way you navigate it. Just remember that SDA should be your computers main drive and SDB should be where you are wanting to CLONE TO, not FROM. Just check the sizes though and you'll be good.
I got tired of trying to find clonezilla on my computer after downloading it. So I did something a little different.
I took the SSD out of the mac, then connected it to this laptop (which is running mint). I formatted the SSD via this computer through the connection with the usb adapter. I then installed a blank SSD back in the Macbook Pro and booted it up on the USB I made a couple of days ago to install mint 17.2 cinnamon.
I have successfully installed mint on the macbook, but not without some hiccups. The biggest of which right now is the wifi is not working. If I can sort this out, I believe I will be ok as with the wifi working I can get whatever updates I need that were not installed during installation due to lack of wifi.
That's awesome, even though my suggestion didn't work I'm glad you found a way! A general thought I see people go by is once you can fully boot then any other problem is minor compared to what you accomplished. WiFi drivers are usually more of a pain for me on Windows than Linux so it shouldn't take too much work. There are probably forums for just about every wifi adapter there is in a mac. Best of luck.
I'm on the hunt now. I set the proper Nvidia driver in the driver manager and connected to the net via wired connection to update anything that needed so.
The only hang ups so far is the wifi and it's running a little sluggish especially when trying to use the start menu for anything
Edit: Ok got the wifi working and chrome is going good. The computer keeps revereting back to a different Graphics driver on it's on, it won't select the recommended Nvdia driver. this and the touchpad are the only two issues I am having. The touch pad I can't right click like normal that's all.
