Linux Mint with AMD (GPU issues)

Hey all,

I recently took a load of old parts and made a PC out of it. I had a spare AMD CPU (Phenom II) and Gigabyte motherboard lying around. I recently picked up a AMD Saphire HD 4850 for €25. I went AMD based upon the recommendation from Logan that it should be a lot easier to install drivers compared to Nvidia (hasn't really been a breeze though).

While I had no issues installing the drivers (automatically installed during Mint installation), I can't for the life of me get to configure the GPU. The temps are way up on it (I think);  I am using 'sensors' (watch -n 1 -d sensors) to monitor the temps and it states:

radeon-pci-0100 is at +84C (this is just after turning on machine)

I have tried installing AMD CCC (using Synaptic Package Manager to install fglrx-amdcccle). While this did install, it reads the following when I try to open the application:

"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.

No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.

Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig."

I just want to mess around with the fan speed settings so I can cool my GPU down. Can anyone help?

Cheers,

Mick

Did you install the FOSS drivers or the non-free fglrx binary drivers? I think the installer goes OSS as much as possible. Also might want to put an actual physical thermometer on the GPU in meatspace, I haven't found sensors to return accurate MB temps reliably and it may be the same for your GPU.
