Linux (Mint) problem

i was trying to instal Linux Mint (ubuntu based) on my external HDD.

The HDD is a seagate 1tb 5400rpm, i don't know the model i got is used.

i already have win7 home premium (on my internal WD HDD) and i followed a tutorial on duabooting win7 and ubuntu on youtube.

i made a linux partition and a swap partiton on the seagate drive,

i started the linux from a usb-thumb drive and booted in linux i formated the partitions as in the tutorial and started to instal, after linux was instaled i asked me if i wanted to reboot or stay in the live demo.

i did reboot gone back into the bios and chose the seagate drive as first boot drive.

but it didn't boot i only had a black screen whit the text someting like 'file directory error' or sometihing like that.

i did try to instal 4 time's i never worked and i can't find an awsner

i'm kinda new to linux (i'm getting sick of win7 and win8 looks like a blown up phone O.S.)

here i some of my system spec (if they mater)

CPU - core 2 quad Q9300

GPU - nvidia gt220

mobo - Pegatron IPIEL-LA3 (it's a OES system by HP)

RAM - 6gb ddr3

sorry form posible typo's engelish isn't my first language.

you cant install it to an external hard drive. it doesnt work like that.

you said you are new to linux, so ill just leave it at that.

thanks ;-I

partician off your main drive in halfs and make a minimum swap of 4gigs. but do not install it beside windows on the same ntfs partician. that will screw it up royally.

but it take's like houres befor i can skirmp the size of my main drive

be patient then, you only need 10 gigs for the install. then you can set it to read files off your windows partician

i did the instal on maidrive thing on my laptop (my desktop takes houres to srimp the drive) and i instald it, but it just booted into windows

If your new to linux and want an easy install i would suggest mint4win for an easy install next to windows (it does everything for you) or wubi which is very similar to mint4win.

I haven't used mint4win but I have used wubi and it works great, I can't use linux sadly because I use nvidia and their drivers suck and the AMD card that is in the side of my room will remain there until I can afford to get some new components.

found this on a forum. Im pretty sure you can do what you are trying to do,.:::::::

Since it is an external you want to be sure to install grub2's boot loader to the MBR of the external drive. The absolute way is as Perkins mentioned in unplugging drive. But if you cannot unplug drive you have to use manual install (Something Else in Natty) to have a choice on where to install the boot loader. You just need to choose / (root) and swap. You only specify a format for / and swap can be 2GB.
