What I hate is that GNU/Linux will never be a mainstream consumer product.

Suse/Novel tried with Meego. They had Asus, Intel, Nokia and Samsung behind them. It failed for the most part. Meemo is dead, Sailfish is on life supprot. Samsung is the only one that uses it and Tizen is far from open source.

Canonical/Ubuntu failed because of “not invented here” syndrome. Also, failed because the GNU/Linux elitist weren’t interested in useablity. I ran the QT versions of Unity on a phone, tablet and PC, it was brilliant.

Redhat hasn’t bothered.

Google and, strangely, Microsoft have done more to push Linux into the mainstream with Crostini and WSL than the major Linux companies. That is pretty pathetic.

So, wifi seems to have totally shit the bed with kernel 5.1.5 on fedora30

was working fine with kernel 5.0.x… Asrock X470 Taichi wireless adapter; think its intel. seems to do this if i do any sort of strenuous network activity. was definitely fine before, have a few hundred gigs of games installed…

edit: looks like a heap of iwlwifi firmware updates were installed into /lib/firmware on may 15th. possibly been broken since then, haven’t used it much as of late. anyone else seeing issues?

What give Linux users such buyers remorse? Is it because their OS is actually no good? Or they’re still trying to convince themselves to use it by trying to convince others? Go into the windows thread and major difference is that here people are defending their shitty OS tooth and nail, and that is absent from the other thread.

Why are Linux users so unwilling to accept any fault in the software they choose? Why is it that every time an issue gets brought up some super sperg swoops in to the rescue to defend the honor of m’OS. Rather than actually addressing the issue it’s always claimed that the issue doesn’t exist (because works on my machine, or user error) or the problem is deflected entirely because “w-w-windows has problems too”; well obviously windows has problems too, fucknut: is this the “WINDOWS HATE THREAD”? Maybe you should take your windows complaints there instead, rather than using them as a shield to protect your OS (who is never going to give you a kiss and tell you that it loves you btw).

This Linux problem denialism is overall harmful to Linux as a whole. Rather than addressing the problems with the system, we are claiming they don’t exist or don’t matter (because accepting them means my OS of choice isn’t absolutely perfect). These issues will never get solved if nobody actually recognizes them, they will fester; simply ignoring them won’t stop them from existing.

If you’re one of these toxic Linux users you should sit down and consider a few things:

  • Just because you didn’t have an issue doesn’t mean it isn’t real
  • Just because it was easy to solve an issue doesn’t mean it’s not an issue
  • Just because it works for you doesn’t mean it works for all
  • If you wan’t someone to hate something, build it up using false advertising
  • Your use case doesn’t cover all use cases
  • All software has problems, pointing that out isn’t a valid defense of software
  • Linux isn’t your friend and doesn’t need your protection
  • It’s OK to accept problems
  • It’s IMPORTANT to accept problems
  • Your priorities aren’t the same as anyone else’s
  • You think about Windows more than Windows users think about Linux

In closing, some rhetorical questions for Linux white knights. These questions aren’t meant to be answered here, but you should think about them and ask them to yourself.

  • What makes you feel the need to defend Linux?
  • Why do you lie about never having problems?
  • What does Linux not do well for you?
  • Why should others be as willing to give that up?
  • Does Linux make your life better?

Its tribalism, brand favoritism, whatever you want to call it. They cant possibly stand to think that they choice they made is in some way wrong, even for someone else.

They are the yeomen in stallmans kingdom.

Whilst I agree with much of what you say, wading into an OS rant thread (really, any x sucks thread is mostly people ranting) and going off on a diatribe about how dare people defend a product is also… pretty toxic, in my opinion.

That said i agree problems need to be acknowledged and denying they exist for some subset of users or that they are a pain in the ass to fix helps nobody.

edit: i hate both platforms in different ways.

Defending linux in a linux hate thread is pointless and off topic. calling them out is also pointless and off topic… but at least one side is having a bit of fun.

I’m going with the theme of “I hate linux because it’s fans are idiots”

ree, feel personally attacked

I wouldn’t say it’s pointless…
It’s a perfect example if why I hate linux!

there are literally dozens of US!

take it to the small linux problems thread, nerd

Because Linux to them is lifestyle/ideological choice which is silly. You don’t see BSD fans doing this.

Compare that to those of us who see it as the tool it is. Imagine people defended a rachet like this. Never mind, I just thought about Snap On fans.

GNU/Linux is great in many ways but not in others. Just like Kit Cars, Rifles and self built PCs are fun but not mainstream. It is a niche people want to use their stuff without having to know how it works.

Most linux fans are smarter than me, but yet so aspy they cant even see the harm they do when they tell a windows user “yes you can play games on it”… while technically true, they never mention the caveats or issues. They set up the expectation that linux can do windows things. That person then tries linux, cant get it to do windows things, and then shits on linux because the original linux user didnt articulate that…

ITS NOT WINDOWS.

Now you have a person who has tried linux only to come to the conclusion that it sucks. The truth is, even today, linux is only vaguely ok at doing windows things and getting them to work can either be perfect or a complete nightmare. More often than not, you have to put much more effort into getting linux to do gaming than windows.

I wont even get into the dick measuring contest that is epeen. No one cares about your uptime, desktops =/= servers. If you can figure out how to admin linux, you should have been able to turn off automatic updates while users are logged in, theres literally a GPO for this, yes it works.

LOL, before you edited that… holy shit. I could feel rage from the kitchen from here.

But I do :^)

It’s the Linux dichotomy: look at protondb and almost all of the games are rated either Platinum or Garbage
