Linux hardware support and IOMMU on AM4 APUs ( A12-9800 for now )

As some of you might know, AMD finally, and very quietly, launched the new AM4 based APUs which were only available to oem manufactures until now. Now, these are not the zen base ones with integrated vega chips, which hopefully would come soon as well, but they can be used with the new ryzen motherboards and chipset.

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be getting any love, and there are not a lot of reviews and feed backs about then out there, specially nothing about running Linux, and yes, the iommu situation, I’ve found these two reviews that had some benchmarking, but the information about chipset support for overclocking seems to be limited:

Now, I don’t have access to a ASUS prime B350M-A motherboard, or any other B350 for that matter, so I can’t help with testing the overclocking, but I have access to a HP machine with A12-9800 at work, so I thought I could at least get the ball rolling on the linux support, specially with an additional discrete graphic card. I am not allowed to install linux on it yet, but I was able to boot a live image ( Fedora-mate-26 ) and have a look. I am sure some of you would like to have that information as well, so here it goes:

This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
unless you know what you're doing.

Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): y

Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.
Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no): y
/dev/port: No such file or directory

Some systems (mainly servers) implement IPMI, a set of common interfaces
through which system health data may be retrieved, amongst other things.
We first try to get the information from SMBIOS. If we don't find it
there, we have to read from arbitrary I/O ports to probe for such
interfaces. This is normally safe. Do you want to scan for IPMI
interfaces? (YES/no): y
/dev/port: No such file or directory

Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any
ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no): y
/dev/port: No such file or directory

Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
on some systems.
Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): y

Sorry, no sensors were detected.
Either your system has no sensors, or they are not supported, or
they are connected to an I2C or SMBus adapter that is not
supported. If you find out what chips are on your board, check
http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices for driver status.

I also got glxinfo. I can post it if anyone was interested.

And here comes the questions:
1- this system also has a “Radeon R7 450” graphic card as well, whatever that is ( I think it is just a rx-450 ), which I know was active because the monitor on which I was reading these info was connected to it, but I couldn’t locate it on the list of the hardware mentioned above. I am pretty sure the VGA in group 9 is the integrated one. What am I missing?

I had other questions, but it is 3 am and I can’t remember them at the moment. I’ll ask them later.

GPU Looks like a variation of the AMD Venus LE?

Which the Rx450 is a modernized and power optimized version of:

8Cu’s x 64 = 512 Shading Units.

https://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/oem/r7

Which means the GPU is hella old actually. I’m little surprised that AMD is keeping this launch quiet since it’s certainly a more OEM market oriented rebadge/relauch of older tech in a new integrated package.

Similar to what the HD8000’s series once was.

Yup, the integrated one is the same one used in fm2+ APUs ( GCN 1 ), just with Higher clock.

Got one last Christmas season for my daughter
Really wanted to benchmark it but since it was a gift didn’t.
Your right about there being almost no info on it.
I tend to shop for sales rather then specific hardware and when I saw this I jumped on it.

Probably didn’t sell cause they mislabeled the iGPU as R5 instead or R7
Thank you for this info, Bristol Ridge is the last of the bulldozer line
Update:

Has a ton of gaming benchmarks. What does this have to do with Linux?
One word…Vulcan. And the one thing an AMD APU does better then intel is gaming

So following the first post here are the questions that I have:

1- with regard to the mentioned HP system, I can’t find out what chipset that system is using. I even looked at the device manager in windows and didn’t find anything there either. if anyone knows a way of detecting this in either windows or linux, please let me know. I should mention that this system uses a HP motherboard and was shipped months before any of the AM4 motherboards became available, so it might not even be using any of the known chipset thou that is very unlikely.

2- I don’t seem to be able to locate both gpus in system information in either OSs. In windows, I only see the radeon R7 450 ( in both device manager and Radeon settings application ), and in LInux ( look at the lspci ouput above ) I only see the

which I am pretty sure is the integrated one. why is that and how can I make both of them visible ? ( in Linux, I don’t care about windows ). As I said before the discrete card must have been active because the monitor was connected to that and not the HDMI port on the motherboard which is by the way covered by the manufacturer.

3- Generally speaking, A12-9800 seems to be a reasonable enough of a cpu to be used with a ASUS prime B350M-A or even better a GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI motherboard for something like a HTPC or even a light gaming machine ( I have played hours of DOOM on the mentioned HP system on windows, 1080p totally playable, thou maybe because of the R7 450 ). Unfortunatlly @wendell hasn’t done any review of a B350 board, and although there are some cpu overclocking info is available for those chipset, I can’t find anything regarding memory overclocking which can have huge performance implication for the iGPU ( based on the reviews available for kaveri APUs ). So if anyone has accesses to any of those boards, it would be great if they could share their experience and IOMMU situation on those systems, or alternatively, point me to some other posts, maybe even on this forum, where those information would be available.

4- I, ideally, would like to see a system with a A12 or even one of the upcoming zen based APUs, the mentioned Gigabyte motherboard or something similar, and a 1070 card and be able to use both GPUs independently. I know it wouldn’t be a sane combination, but I think it would be “quaint”. You know, watching youtube while training on the other one, that sort of thing. My question here is whether something like that would be possible, not practical, but possible under linux? any feedback would be really appriciated.

@anon85933304 hey thanks for the reply, yes when I saw your old post with those missing pictures showed up in the search result, I was convinced that I had do something myself. I hate it when I have to do stuff myself.

Speaking of which, I am new here, I literally just signed up yesterday to be able to post those info and ask these questions. These are in part hardware questions and I am not sure how I can post this thread under hardware category as well, or even if that is possible, so feedback on that would be appreciated as well.

 sorry, but in my defense, they are not in the ryzen playlist. I knew I remembered seeing something thou, sorry @wendell. Thanks for all the videos.

Thanks, I was worried I might have been taking the thread in a hardware direction and away from Linux. Really great info you have given.

So I bought a A12-9800 and a asus b350 prime mother board. In the coming days I will start to test and benchmark different ram speeds and overclocking and gpu pass through scenarios, and I will post the results hers. If there is anything specific for which you guys want me to look, let me know.

Gonna look forward to your findings regarding gpu passthrough, let’s see whether being an old CPU arch helps in that regard or whether being the neglected child of the AM4 platform hurts it.
