Linux hard freezing playing dota2

Sounds like turbo boost boosted the clocks beyond spec after the new microcode for Haswell got applied. Ivy Bridge to Haswell is more affected by the new microcode for Spectre and Meltdown and increased system stress beyond what it used to be.

You’ll need to boost voltages and permanently enable “performance” governor. Turning off Turbo locks your processor to it’s slowest base clock, so while it helps stability, you lose all the performance your processor is capable of.

Do an FFmpeg encode as the stability test, you’ll quickly find instability even at stock.

So i set the governor to powersave / performace and did ffmpeg encodes on very slow for a little over an hour each. System was stable.

I did dota 2 on power save while running i7z and it crashed within 10 minutes.

This is the stats when the system hard locked.

Ran dota2 on performance governor

crashed within 2 minutes of the game.

At this point the only way to make this stable is to disable the turbo functionality in bios =\
