Linux has seen some serious mainstream use, especially (Almost exclusively, I should say) in the netbook environment, where it has a 30% share in the Asus and Acer netbook lines. It's been used because it is lightweight, not a resource hog, eye-friendly, and when tweaked by the OEM, simple and easy-to-use.
Only problem is Windows 7. Microsoft has focused hard on netbooks, after being surprised by a major sale spike in netbooks back in late 2008. They've had to recycle their old XP product just to get a slice of the new market, because their battleship OS is too top heavy. Windows 7 solves all of this, more or less, while offering that eye-friendly Vista/Linux look. The way things are going right now, Linux is going to be back on the down-low, as a nerd's play toy.
The day we see Windows 7 running on an ATM, is the day I will permit Rice to say:
"This is it, Open Source is finished."
Linux still has a place in my heart.
Windows 7 keeps sounding better and better. I'm not going to believe it yet till I see it.
eh? it would be hella annoying to see nice good ol' linux to become yet another cult or fad in the mainstream. if we wanna throw ubuntu or some other linux distro on our computers/netbooks, then we will.
i love windows 7.
the nvidia video drivers that are meant for it suck but just give it known working vista drivers and its godlike
I think you mean.
It's over, Open Source is finished.
Although it won't until they upgrade Paint.
[edit]
It's over, Open Source is finished.
Linux is teeeee best...
If only the font rendering were better... Makes me go back to Windows everytime-
linux isnt going anywhere lmao
it basically rules the server world running VMware with windows as a port
trust me linux will be around for a while yet
Rice, fixing that now.
Also, Packet, does your average 13-year old girl use a server to cruise Myspace?
I'm talking consumer products, as in, Netbooks. You don't see me, Logan, or Rice using a netbook any time soon. Well, actually, Rice may get one to store MONSTROUS amounts of porn on, and conveniently fit it into a safe.
Linux will always be around. Because you can't beat the stability, and you can't beat FREE. And most of all, you can't beat open-source.
If Linux good do everything windows could windows would be finished! and forgotten/remembered as the most instable OS on the planet.
Linux is also quite a bit more fun to tweak with to and you can adjust the fonts in the control center (that's for greensli)
Yeah tried that before, but it never really gets where I want it
