I just got an old computer working with ubuntu (thanks to overlordnick) but i don't know any good games (nly my steam library) to play... any ideas?
Old, but there are Linux editions on Quake games and various guide/forums/sites to support them
Garry's Mod
There is a Left 4 Dead 2 beta
Stealth Bastard
Hotline Miami
Organ Trail
Portal
Thomas Was Alone
Counter Strike: Source
Red orchestra, Bit trip runner, Bastion, and Serious Sam: BFE
There are also a lot of open source games, just as much fun and allow you to keep your GNU/Linux system untainted if you prefer that:
- Minetest/Terrasology/etc...
- RedEclipse/Nexuiz/Warsow/Cube/Sauerbraten/etc...
- Openmw/etc...
- Flightgear
I mostly play Minetest Classic (0.3.1 vanilla, for an experience like when MC was still fun, but then a lot faster) and Minetest with mods (0.4.7 + a lot of mods for a faster and graphically enhanced MC FTB-like experience), and all kinds of FPS's, but most of the time RedEclipse (Quake/UT-like fast paced chaos, really fast program, runs on anything with dazzling framerate) or Sauerbraten (hard core classic CS-like chaos), I'm not that into fantasy games/adventures, so I don't really play those. Flightgear is a crazy good realistic flight simulator if you like that, it's actually what's used for training simulators, it's by far the best realistic flight simulator bar none.
There is so much game development in linux that there is an alternative for every closed source game out there, just not in the commercial Ubuntu repos. Maybe you should think about switching to a more open source oriented distro like Fedora or Arch/Manjaro, which both have a lot of open source games in their distros. Fedora used to have a games spin, but it's not continued for Fedora 18, maybe with Fedora 19 it will come again. In the Arch repos, the Manjaro repos and the AUR, there is everything, especially in the AUR, if you're a gamer, Arch-based distros that are AUR-compatible are really the way to go. A lot of open source game devs also package .DEB, so you could pull most games into Ubuntu, but Debian is probably a much better choice for gaming performance and stability, because there are few games that run out of the box on Ubuntu, while on Debian, Fedora or Arch/Manjaro, most games just run out of the box.
As far as closed source games go, Ubuntu is also kind of a mess when it comes to steam games or PlayOnLinux GOG games, often games don't work and require major configuration and/or hacking to make them work in Ubuntu, which is not the case for Fedora/Arch/Debian, where steam and steam games, or even PlayOnLinux wine-games just seem to work immediately without hassle.
I highly recommend Debian 7 Wheezy if you want to game on Linux - Fedora 18 is also a good OS
Minecraft, Trine 2, Team Fortress 2?
If you do, use the hard-float version, otherwise you may run into general use issues with the soft-float version.
